- Chapter 126 - The captains’ summit

“Just as we heard from Lady Eina Bodel, the platoon from the empire has arrived in the Fenkol area a few days ago. The Black Wolf Knights will keep monitoring them”
Remyl Ein was reading the rapport she held in her hands.
We were in the Kingdom’s Knights Headquarters’ meeting room. All of the five captains of their respective Knights Orders were to be present here today.
…But actually, two of the captains were missing. They had sent knights to represent them in their stead.
That being said, even without them present the meeting was implemented.
“Understood. Anyone else with anything to report?”
The one that asked this once Remyl was done was the captain of the Kingdom’s heart, captain of the Protection Knight Order – Teuros Greva.
A big man cladded with armor hailed as the hardest knight of the kingdom.
The “barrier magic” he uses in battle is hard to destroy, even by the biggest and baddest monsters.
It is the very reason he is responsible for the protection of the palace.
For many years he has been under the service of the current King, William Tyrock, and is very trusted by the king himself.
It is most likely due to this connection that the Protection Knight Order backed Zeil Tyrock in his position as a candidate for the throne.
However, Zeil of course got incarcerated for the attempted assassination of Iris Reifell.
Though he was the second choice to be the heir to the throne, he led his emotions to get hold of him and committed disgraceful deeds.
I must say that finding out he was a silver lining of a dark cloud.
William himself too was not going to forgive his son for the sins he had committed. … The Tyrock family is still in power as of now but will be unable to succeed the crown any further.
That being said, Teuros is still backing the Tyrock family.
Perhaps to hail the trust he gained from William.
“I have nothing to announce, but do have a question”
A man whose hair is so long that it covered his very eyes suddenly raised his hand. If you would look at him you would question whether he’d be a decent man, yet still, he too was a Knights Captain.
It was Heiron Stilletto, Knights Captain of the Holy Armour Knights Order.
Actually, the moment the Empire’s platoon arrived Remyl had many meetings with him.
Next to Heiron stood his beloved great sword.
It was almost as if he looked at one of the Swordsman Gang members Ruino had defeated a while back and thought like “I want to use a sword like that too”.
Remyl didn’t think that he would be able to actually use a sword that massive though.
“What is it, Heiron?”
“We’ve had an insurrection within the Protective Knights Order a while back, and was wondering whether everyone involved got rounded up. It’s been a while so…”
“We’re still investigating… Is all that I can say”
“All right. Well then, I will also dispatch some members from my order to help with the investigation. If this is to take any longer it could impede with whatever follows”
“That’s—”
“There is no need for that. The king himself has entrusted this task entirely to Teuros. We have no right to speak against this”
Remyl entered their conversation as well. Though they’re all part of the knight orders, they keep on restraining one another like this.
Perhaps it has to do with some political power in play.
Remyl herself has little interest in these political authorities – Still, though they were all part of the same country, she despised this pretending to cooperate kind of behavior.
That being said, she also values Teuros in that regard.
Even after what happened with Zeil – He didn’t abandon house Tyrock.
That’s where he really showed how much of a loyal retainer he actually is.
You could say he is in a similar situation as Remyl is too.
Every Knight Order has a crown candidate they support.
The Black Wolf Knight Order supports Iris Reinfell. She is the Sword Master Princess, and the number one choice for the throne right now. But the fact that she actually doesn’t aim to be the next king, nor has any interest in it is not known to many.
If Iris were to actually proclaim that she was going to be the next in line, then surely that would become a reality in little time.
However, Iris aims to be a knight.
A King of course has a position in where they’d have to protect their land, but to be on the front line of the battle itself is something unheard of.
For the life of Iris she never really had that choice though.
Remyl has yet talked with Iris about this subject. She had always thought that she should respect the choices of the daughter of Garlo. But, for the sake of the country, she figured she should convince Iris to do otherwise. Whether Iris will comply though, she does not know.
“…Perhaps you’re right. The King did leave it to him. Please, regard this question as if it never came up”
“Well then, I expect every Order to correspond to the announcements of today. I will report to the king directly”
“Yes, please”
“Understood. By the way, how is the Kings’ health as of late?”
“… Relatively good you could say”
“Right. That is a godsend”
“Any other questions?”
“None, sorry for the trouble”
“Well then, the meeting is closed”
And so the Captain’s summit came to an end.
The question Heiron asked Teuros in the end… It intrigued Remyl as well.
Ever since William’s health broke down a few years back he has barely made an appearance in public.
And after the ordeal with Zeil there was even less opportunity for him to show himself.
As Remyl left the meeting room,
“Wait up, Remyl”
It was Heiron.
“…Heiron. What is it?”
“It’s about the point I raised during the meeting”
“Aah, about the rumors of the Magic Cult?”
Heiron had reported about an organization that is gaining momentum within the Kingdom itself.
It was about the Magic Cult, Bulfaus. Prior to this, the group was called after a certain saint. They are an organization that fights for the rights of mages, hoping to establish a place where they can provide a place for their “Mageism”.
“When it comes to magic, the Gardea Kingdom is not developed enough yet. No matter how many times they will try to emphasize their rights, it won’t go any further than talks”
“There are monsters on which magic has no effect – I mean, even I know that much. Still, there are some radicals within that group you know. To the effect that they’re willing to show their strength by using it. We’ve also found some of their members near the Fenkol area. Please be careful, is all that I wish to say”
“…That’s unexpected. You warning me”
“Is that so? I think of you as a close friend though”
Heiron left with a faint smile on his face.
Remyl saw him off as he made his back smaller as he walked away.
…Would he actually mean to be willing to cooperate? Is that why he reported this?
(…However)
Remyl had the feeling there was more than meets the eye.
It was just a hunch, but she felt like Heiron was planning something. She doesn’t really know what… But just as Heiron said himself, if he has something that needs to be reported to the Black Wolf Knights Order, then he will do so.
As these thoughts were running through her head a knight walked up to her.
“Captain Remyl Ein”
“What is it? One after another…”
“…Hm?”
“No, nothing. What is it?”
“Truth is, there is someone that would like to meet with you, captain”
“…A guest, for me? Is it Lady Eina?”
“No, it is a woman named Mariel Schweiss”
“…What did you say?”
It was a name Remyl was familiar with. After all, it was the name of her most entrusted subordinate, Alta Schweiss.
