- Chapter 121 - Older sister and younger sister

“Care to explain what this is supposed to mean?”
I was being scolded by my younger sister – Cloe. I laughed bitterly in return.
I knew that this was going to be quite bothersome for the blacksmith as well, so I refrained from arguing with her here.
Cloe can be harsh with words, but she’s always willing to listen to my side of the story. We went to a café nearby.
“That being said, why are you here Cloe?”
“I am the one asking questions here! Why did you break the Blue Shell Blade!? That blade has been a family heirloom of the Schweiss family, passed down generation to generation you know. To break something like that… Unheard of!”
It’s true. The Blue Shell Blade has been passed down from generation to generation in the Schweiss family.
The current head of the family is my father, but I won’t be the next in line. Consequently, I am actually not eligible to carry the Blue Shell Blade around in the first place.
However, it has been granted to me as I am the Kingdom’s youngest knight… Granted to me by the Schweiss family.
But my little sister Cloe does not seem to agree with that.
“Well, I fight during work you know. So it’s bound to break sometime”
“It’s bound to break sometime, you say? Isn’t it because you’re bad at handling the blade in the first place?”
“Don’t say that, that hurts a bit”
— But perhaps she’s right. IF I had actually conducted myself properly I could’ve finished that fight without having the sword broken.
But there is little use in explaining a swordsman battle to Cloe anyway.
There was only one thing I could do.
“It’s my fault. But it can’t be helped now that it’s broken already”
“…Haa. I already figured you were inappropriate using that sword. It should’ve been our older sister wielding that blade anyway!”
As Cloe was clattering and clattering away, she took her cup in hand and took a sip of her coffee. She frowned her eyebrows and set up a clear-to-see face of distaste.
“There’s milk and sugar if you’d like”
“I-I don’t need it. I am not a child anymore. As a daughter of the Schweiss family, I cannot show such disgraceful behavior.”
To sweeten up your coffee in front of your brother isn’t really a form of disgraceful behavior I feel.
I’d even argue that it is childlike to behave that way in the first place… But I knew that Cloe was going to get angry if I’d say so, so I just shut up.
Cloe and I are… Frankly spoken, on bad terms.
I don’t hate her by any means, but Cloe does hate me ever so.
When we first met it wasn’t like that. She used to be a bashful girl.
However, now she’s become such a blatantly aggressive kind of girl.
“Talking of our big sister, did you not come together?”
“…That’s right. I told her that I was fine on my own, but she didn’t listen to me, so..”
Well, our older sister wouldn’t let Cloe come all the way here, just by herself… That being said, it might’ve been our older sister that has business in the Kingdom.
“…So, where is she then? I wouldn’t dare assume she’d be—”
“That assumption is correct. We went together but I soon got lost, so…”
It might be unkind to say, but that is exactly where their relationship gets so interesting.
Cloe, the younger sister, and my older sister, — Mariel Schweiss.
As the heir of our household, she is always worried about Cloe, so she makes sure that they always move out together.
But then again, as soon as they lose each other out of sight she gets this kind of wanderlust over her.
Back when we were younger, Cloe would start to cry when she was searching for Mariel who got lost, and she would then always face Cloe with a kind smile on her face once she had been found again.
I always figured that she did it on purpose so that she could be the hero of her own mishaps.
Still, the Cloe as we know her now is definitely not going to cry, even though she’s on her own. And Mariel, who disappeared, won’t come back any time soon either.
Meaning, Cloe is still searching for Mariel.
And so the reason Cloe came to the Blacksmith was to search for Mariel.
Mariel could literally be anywhere, but the blacksmith and the weapon store would be likely places to find her.
I too understood at least that much.
“We’ll leave searching for our older sister until later… Cloe, why did you come here? Do you know the occasion?”
“O-Of course I know. But we’ll discuss that once we’ve found big sister. You have to help look for her as well!”
“I already said I would…”
As I thought, Cloe has no idea why she even came to the Kingdom. Or so it seems at least.
So that would mean that Mariel has business in the Kingdom… But she rarely comes here.
(I just hope it is nothing too strange)
Just when the peaceful days had returned to me I find myself intertwined with the meddlings of house Schweiss. I have a rather unnerving feeling about this.
It’s a bit of a different crisis than before I feel.
I sighed at the sight of Cloe, who once again pulled a grimace after taking a sip of her coffee.
I really hope nothing happens.
“Haaa… This is hopeless”
The girl left out a big sigh as she looked around her restlessly.
She had wavy golden hair and wore a pitch-black dress. She had put her hand to her mouth and pulled a troubled face.
Even from far away, you could tell that she was quite the sight. One would figure that such a troubling sight would not drive men away, but she then also had a rather hard to talk to kind of atmosphere hanging around herself.
However, there was one person that looked at this girl and could not help standing idly by.
That person was Iris Reinfell.
Though she rarely goes out on her own on her off days, today was such a day where Iris did indeed walk outside on her own.
The reason as to why she did this was unknown to all but Iris.
After Iris had finished her to-be-left in secret doings she met with this woman on her way back home.
“Erh… Are you in trouble?”
“I am… I am – Oh my, you’re quite the quiet little lady, aren’t you? What is your name, young lady?”
“Hm? I-I am Iris Reinfell”
Iris, who thought that she was able to help this woman who seemed in need of help, was suddenly praised and asked her name. She answered the woman honestly.
As the woman heard Iris’ name she put on a rather friendly face and,
“Well well. So you are Lady Iris Reinfell! Aren’t you the daughter of one of the great noble houses? I have to introduce myself then.”
The woman acted as if she too was of noble descent, and took her dress’ hem by the hand and made a little bow.
Iris too, would, as the noble she is, do this if she were at a party for example.
However, to do this sort of greeting in such a normal place like this was something she’d never do herself, so she was quite surprised when she saw the woman do so.
She took Iris to another place and continued her talk,
“My name is Mariel. I am a rather normal noble of sorts.”
“Of sorts…?”
“Fufu, nobles are to be found everywhere, no? After all, you’re here too, lady Iris”
“That might be so… But eh, Mariel, are you in trouble?”
“Hmmm… Hmmm hmm. Perhaps you were worried about me then?”
Ever since the two of them started talking, Mariel had been quite calm in her way of talking.
At first, Iris had asked her if she was in trouble, but that seemed to have been over rather soon.
Once again, Iris started asking Mariel more questions.
“Alright then. What have you been up to here, Mariel?”
“Ufufu, To ask someone you’ve never seen nor met such a question… That’s quite like you, Lady Iris of the four great noble houses. A girl as precious as you … How I’d love to have you as my little sister”
“S-sister? … Erh…”
“Ufufu, I am joking. I am truly sorry. I just wanted to talk with you”
“Ah… Well, I don’t mind that, but I was really worried that you were in trouble actually”
“The things that trouble me are rather simple, truly. Truth is… I came to the Kingdom with my little sister you see. But I’m afraid she’s lost. No matter how hard I try I just can’t seem to find her. I just don’t know what to do anymore…”
“! Your little sister… That’s quite something, isn’t it? I will call on to the knights close by and—”
“No need to panic that much. I don’t want this to blow up so much. Still.. I’d be really grateful if there was just anyone that could help me look for my sister…”
Mariel said as she interrupted Iris.
As she did she kept on looking over at Iris.
Iris didn’t really have anything planned after this. Besides, Iris would’ve gone looking for her sister even if she didn’t request her to do so.
For the sake of argument, even if Iris did have any form of plans, she would still help Mariel find her sister.
Iris nodded and answered immediately.
“If that’s the case, then I will help you. Could you tell me any particulars about your sister?”
“Ufufu, she’s such a cute little girl. Just like you, she has a dignified look on her face. As of late her way of talking has become a little brash though… but she’s really a good girl. Really”
“Eh… That’s not the kind of traits that I had meant… Could you tell me what her hair or face looks like instead?”
“Well well, calm down first. Let’s first walk around town while we search for her, alright?”
“Eh…”
Mariel took Iris by the arm and intertwined it with her own, as they started walking.
Iris was a bit flustered by what had happened, but as she got back to senses she started walking at Mariel’s pace.
— And like this Iris had started helping looking.
