- Chapter 76 - What a swordsman should be

I talked with Eina and Mersche while we were moving throughout the Kingdom.
“I am very sorry, but we lost sight of both the Shadow Apostles and Iris.
“No problem. I know how they move” – I answered in response to Mersche’s remark.
“Well, if you know where they are it shouldn’t be too hard. Let’s move at once”
“No, LAdy and Mersche, please go to the knights instead. You know Remyl Ein, the Knight’s captain, right?”
“We know, but they’re –“
“The ones you are tracking down. I know. However, this is part of the tactic. I want you to rendezvous with the knights’ captain and shut off their escape routes”
“…I see. That too is necessary, huh”
Mersche lowered her head understandingly, however, Eina seemed somewhat dissatisfied.
I understand that a girl like her, one that loves to fight, would’ve wanted to go to the front line. However, the assassins are also after her. Yet,
“Lady Eina, you’re their target. I cannot take you with me, sadly. You, Wise Lady Eina, should understand this, correct?”
“…The way you say it sounds all the more like a challenge to me”
“Hahaha, nono, that’s not it. Still, it should be rather clear what we all should do at this time”
“So you’re going alone?”
“That’s right. I go alone, and if they flee I will hunt them down”
“Wha, to do that alone you need quite a lot of confidence… However, you also need enough strength, and I suppose you have that”
Eina said as she looked at me.
“We’ll pray for a good battle. This time, we leave it all to you”
“Thank you very much”
With a faint handshake, I left the two of them there.
I know where Iris is – I gave her a “charm” before.
I gave it to her for protection, but I never imagined that it would come in this handy.
(Well then, if I have to go underground, I guess I’ll go from here)
I headed for the kingdom’s water canal. There I can enter the “caves” that connect the whole kingdom.
The place where I fought the Swordsman Gang before is also part of that same cave system.
Iris’ movement had stopped for a while at one certain place.
Perhaps that is where the Shadow Apostles’ hideout is. Even within the darkness, I didn’t hesitate on my way over.
“Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa”
“A demon? I see, they live in the underground…”
I remembered, especially since Remyl became busy – More and more monsters were appearing in the cave system.
I don’t know how this is connected though – So I laugh.
Then – I took out Invisible and cut the monster’s neck.
“—-“
Soon the monster died.
I sighed and went on.
(I just finished what another knight should actually be busy with… I guess that’s what knights are to do. I will just ask for an increase in my salary)
Me dealing with the demons below the capital – Perhaps these beasts were deployed by the Shadow Apostles, and more might be coming for me. However, I am not their enemy.
I directly went towards where Iris was.
****
Iris took out her Purple Lightning and faced Qufirio.
The little boy Qufirio was looking back but did not move.
He left out a sigh and started talking with a sort of fed up tone.
“So you’ve actually managed to find this place”
“…I did. After all, she’s my family”
“Family, you say – Is this lightning magic yours?”
Qufirio seemed to have caught up quickly.
Iris kept the lightning surging throughout the walls and the floor. With this, she was able to grasp what the building was and allowed her to perceive movement on a large scale.
This kept the consumption rate of her magic rather high, but Iris didn’t care.
But it also allowed her to find Qufirio’s underground hideout.
Along her way here she also ran into various demons, but she didn’t care for them. She cut them down and managed to get here.
Alia, who they had captured, looked at Iris with a very painful look.
Iris knew what she wanted to say – She never hoped for me to come here.
Still, she did want to meet me. Iris knew that far too well.
She never wanted Alia as her enemy, but she wanted to meet her no matter what.
“So.. Did you come here alone?”
“Ye, that’s right. Right now I’m alone”
“…Hoho, big girl. As expected from the Swordmaster Princess”
“Is that relevant right now?”
“I think it is, actually. With that blade in hand you’re going to fight me, aren’t you? But can you actually win like that I wonder?
You’ve lost your breath, your magic is dwindling. You’re completely wounded. But perhaps you came here to assist me inst—–!”
Qufirio was interrupted by Iris’s attack.
She covered the distance between them with a single leap forward. Just barely Qufirio managed to dodge the attack.
Iris had meant to release Alia immediately, but she must focus on the enemy that stands before her right now.
She can’t catch her breath. Her body is wounded, and she is exhausted.
Still, the attack that she just unleashed against Qufirio was one of the strongest attacks she had yet swung.
She’s yet by senses and is able to concentrate.
Iris was swinging her sword most properly.
(My body is so heavy… But my blade so light. I can still move. I can still fight…!)
That very conviction is what propels Iris forward.
Iris soon moved again.
Another three strikes. She covered the distance between her and Qufirio and swung her sword.
Qufirio took out his shortblades and defended against Iris’ blade.
The lightning stopped – Before she had already stopped donning the lightning around her body, and now it is only flowing in her blade.
Qufirio looked at Iris and let out a laugh.
“Ahahah, close call, wasn’t it? Sure you don’t want to shock me like before?”
He taunted her, in an attempt to disturb her movement. But Iris didn’t fall for the taunt.
She gripped her blade tightly and answered Qufirio.
“Perhaps, just now – No, I was relying on Purple Lightning. But no, that’s not it. They’ve called me the Swordmaster Princess before I even had this blade!!”
“…!”
She repelled his shortblade and made an attack straight towards his abdomen.
There was no hesitation in this movement, and this attack was fully meant to kill Qufirio.
Qufirio kicked the ground and stepped backward.
He bleeds lightly from his abdomen.
“First one attack. But it seems that’s not enough”
“…You surprise me. Have you grown in that little time?”
Qufirio opened his eyes widely. There was little magical power nor physical power left.
Iris was far from perfect condition. Still, she moved – For before her, was a precious family member. So it was quite the obvious choice.
She gathered her pride and said.
“Of course. To protect my family. For them, I will become as strong as I can ever be”
That is what Iris Reinfell is to be.
Qufirio laughed happily once he heard this.
“Ahaha, that sounds not like something someone of your age would say. Still, you’re in my way…
Alia, I will kill your fake family from here on out. For I am your actual family”
Though Qufirio said this, Iris didn’t care. She left out a small sigh and then gripped Purple Lightning firmly again.
Right next to her laid Alia, captured. But she didn’t even look at her – What Iris had to do was right before her. To strike down the enemy before her eyes.
Qufirio prepared his blades again. Both of them were ready to fight once more.
