“Didn’t you get the report?”
“Well… We did hear talk of a robber getting caught…”
I decided to ask some Black Wolf knights a little bit away from the market place to ask what happened.
This was their response.
Iris eventually left for the academy, worried about where Alia might have gone. That’s why I had the chance to investigate here for a while.
If Alia indeed handed over the thief to the knights, then I should get a lead here.
But, as I asked the knights about it, no such thing seemed to have happened.
“When did you hear of this?”
“It been a while now, so I suppose the report should come out soon”
“There’s another knight that hasn’t returned, so should we wait on them, and see what they know?”
“No, if someone was captured, then they must’ve come here. I will return to the crime scene for now”
“Understood. If anything happens, we’ll deploy more knights on the crime scene”
“Yes, please”
And so I left that talk for what it was.
So Alia did lie – Iris too said that she felt some form of discomfort back then.
(The reason Alia lied was…)
I really can’t figure out why.
The boy that she captured – If he somehow was acquainted with Alia, then there might’ve been a reason for her to let him go.
I would only get to know the truth if I were to ask the person in question themselves.
(…But then again, the person in question would still only answer with [I handed them over], no matter how hard I’d try questioning them)
If a suitcase were stolen, then I am sure that the knight’s order would investigate, and question the person who had his suitcase stolen.
But, that information also didn’t come in.
There is a thief, and a stolen case – Yet, no one to link any of this to.
I decided to head for the marketplace again.
As I did, I came across the market stall where the suitcase was stolen and decided to ask them too.
“Excuse me”
“Welcome, what can I get ya?”
“No, sorry, I actually have a few questions”
“..Eh… Sorry, but I am actually in business now. Not to be rude, but can’t you fill your free time elsewhere?”
The stall owner’s behavior was… off. He must think that I am a child that’s playing around.
…But he should be used to that, in a place like this.
Though I am a knight, that might be hard to see due to my young age.
Rather than explaining all of that, it might be easier to just go along with this and ask them.
“Well, if you say so. Then let me buy this first then”
“Thank you for your patronage… So, what did you want to ask?”
“Well, I thought that there was a robbery not too long ago”
“Oh right. The man started yelling, and then a young girl gave chase. Really quite something to see, wasn’t it?”
Seems like the stall owner did indeed pay some attention to what happened before him.
But that isn’t what I’m interested in.
“The boy that stole the goods, what happened to him?”
“Hmm? What happened to… Well, I didn’t really notice after that. Someone went to the knights and see. But in the end, there was a detective I think.
That’s what I heard at least”
“Ooh, I see. Thank you so much”
“Playing around is one thing, but leave the dangerous stuff to the knights, alright?”
“Right! I’ll be careful”
Actually I am exactly that kind of knight, but I’ll let that slide.
…According to the stall owner, there was indeed a burglary. So someone in this area must know more.
But most seem to think that it has already been resolved.
Yet in truth, both the suspect and the stolen goods have disappeared.
(Seems like I do have to ask Alia again about what had happened)
I can’t really think of much else.
I too will have to return to the academy.
I will ask Alia once more and see if she can tell me anything at all. After that, I will return to the office and confirm what I have come to know.
Quite a strange story though, the fact that nothing has been reported at all – After all, the knights can’t do more than that.
…Remyl might actually be into a story such as this one though.
As I returned to the academy I went straight for the girl’s dorms, where I also saw Iris scanning the area around her.
When she saw me she came running at me.
“Mr. Schweiss! Have you seen Alia anywhere?”
“She’s not here?”
“She wasn’t in her room… I also checked within the school grounds, but I have found no trace of her”
Iris said, with an ever so worried face.
Perhaps Alia hadn’t returned to the academy yet.
“She might actually be having a rest somewhere”
“Yes, she seemed quite unwell. I will check the perimeter of the school and then come back here!”
“Well, then I will-“
“No need”
The one that interrupted me was none other than Alia herself.
She made an entrance as if she was falling from the sky.
Now that’s what I’d call elusive.
Alia was soon met by Iris’s hug.
“Where’d you been, Alia?!”
“On the roof. I was tired”
“I’m sure I checked up there though”
“I am not that easily found, especially not by you Iris”
“All I was was worried…”
Alia soon put her fingers in some sort of a peace sign motion, which gave Iris some form of relaxed feeling it seemed.
As if she never disappeared.
“Teach, did you get the information you wanted from the knights?”
“!Yes, just now!”
“I suppose they said there was nothing?” – Alia asked as if she pierced through my mind.
It seems likely that that was actually the case.
I laughed doubtingly.
“Right. Might be because there is no official report yet”
“No. There won’t be any at all, probably”
“What do you mean by that?”
“I might not have handed the thief to a knight after all..”
Alia said with a dignified look on her face.
If she didn’t hand them to a knight then – It might actually be possible for Alia to be an accomplice to the thief she caught then.
(It actually seems to be rather likely)
“Still, there is no report of any stolen goods either”
“Oh, Alia actually returned them to their owner. With her magic, she managed to deliver them back”
Iris said in support of Alia.
She actually returned the goods back to the victim? – If that’s truly so, then that actually solves almost everything.
The problem is the knight to which she handed over the thief though. Where would this knight be?
I have some doubts, but it seems like Alia did as much as she could.
In the end, I was the one that let her chase after the thief.
“So there is a chance that the imposter knight and the thief actually got away?”
“I am sorry. I didn’t notice”
“That’s fine. The responsibility is mine. You did what you could, Alia. Do you remember what the knight looked like?”
“Yes. I will draw them, and then hand that drawing to you” – Alia said noddingly.
If she’s actually going this far in helping out, then it doesn’t seem like she’s on the side of the thief after all.
(Doubting your students. That’s not something I want to do much as a teacher)
Right now, I am both a knight and a teacher at this academy.
For the time being, I will continue the investigation with what I know.
“Oh right. Are you feeling well, Alia?”
“I’m fine. Like I said, just tired. Did you end the date already then?”
“It wasn’t really a date anyway… Anyway, I’m glad you’re fine”
“It’s my duty to keep Iris safe, so as long as she is, I am fine too”
As expected from their friendship.
Rather than taking me along on my free day, they would’ve had more fun with just the two of them I reckon.
In the end, this day was a tad bit too puzzling, with everything that had happened.
But the fact that a few days later Alia would disappear completely was beyond anything Iris and I expected.
