- Volume 9 Chapter 169 - (Comic’s Second Volume Publication Celebration!) A Formal Marriage Interview… With Father (Part 1)
Translator: Jasper Kadowaki | Editor: NovelMultiverse
This story is on a weekend during the time Sera was a first-grader at the School of Knighthood. It follows the chronology in the comics.
When I returned home from school, the manor seemed a little busier than usual.
“Martha, do we have a guest this weekend? That’s unusual,” I said.
Martha was getting my change of clothes from a drawer, and for a moment, she looked troubled.
“It’s Count Larick. He came by without prior notice. He’s caused quite a stir,” said Martha.
“Who’s that? I’ve never heard of him. Is he a friend of Father’s?” I asked.
“He might think he is, but if he were a true friend, he’d take our plans into consideration, too, wouldn’t he?” said Martha.
“True,” said Lu, hopping off of my shoulder and onto the bed, curling up in a ball.
“I wonder what business he has, here,” I said.
“A formal marriage interview,” said Martha.
“…For brother?” I asked.
“For the master,” said Martha.
“For father?” I asked.
“Yes. Count Larick’s younger sister has been infatuated with the master for some time, and as soon his wife passed away, she’s asked him to remarry time and time again…”
“Well, that’s… not right…” I said.
How could she bring up remarrying to Father as soon as Mother passed away? Was she dumb? That was what I thought at first, but then I thought that perhaps that was a way of thinking that I had brought with me from my past existence. It probably wasn’t such a strange occurrence among nobles in this world.
However, my parents married out of love, which was very unusual for nobles in this world. This man had just lost his wife and the love of his life, and his wounds had not yet healed. Bringing him a marriage proposal from a new woman was simply a terrible move, no matter how you looked at it.
On top of that, the Granzeus household had Martha, Enrique, and Matsuki – trusted servants who were practically family, and also a large fortune. Saying that there was a young child in the family that had just lost her mother and needed a mother for support… That strategy wouldn’t make sense.
“What’s the occasion that calls for today’s visit?” I asked.
“Ah, well… They must have heard somewhere that the daughter of the house enrolled in the School of Knighthood, and since he didn’t have a child to take care of anymore, the master should start looking for happiness in other places. Something like that… Those two siblings have been running their mouths,” said Martha.
“What?! They used me as their excuse?” I asked.
“They made Sera seem like a burden that disappeared… That’s going to add gas to the flames. Why’s such a bothersome person been allowed into the manor?” asked Lu, sighing. I passed on his question to Martha.
“He has a letter of recommendation from the queen. Because of that, we can’t just politely turn him away at the door, as usual…” said Martha.
I reflexively narrowed my eyes.
“Oh, really… So, this Count Larick is in the second-born prince’s faction? Does that mean that our family is being used as a pawn by royals to get Count Larick to join their organization?” I asked.
“Yet another reason for Isaac to be disgusted by them,” said Lu.
“What tactics is Father using to turn them away?” I asked.
“He still needs to keep the queen’s dignity in mind, so he just tells them that he can’t love anyone else besides his late wife, but she simply says in return, ‘I shall embrace you with love completely, even the parts that still keep your late wife as a precious memory’. My, my, how persistent she is…” said Martha.
Martha was quietly fuming, as well. She had supported Father since she was a little girl, after all.
“So, she just won’t listen, huh… Annoying!” said Lu.
It really was quite annoying. I had to do fieldwork, and I hadn’t been back home for three weeks, and now this!
“Martha, when will Brother return?” I asked.
“I’ve heard that he will be having dinner with us,” said Martha.
“Martha, I want to clear something up with you. Father really doesn’t want to marry that woman, right? He’s not just declining to marry her for my or Brother’s sake, is he?” I asked.
“Absolutely not! Have you forgotten that I have watched over Master Isaac for decades? Master has no feelings for that woman, and she only wants him for his looks and his wealth. She knows that bearing children and raising them takes physical and mental effort, so she wants to be a second wife! Apparently, she even let this slip at a tea party. According to Pashu the Jeweler, she ordered a diamond necklace and earrings, saying that Granzeus would pay for it!” said Martha.
“Martha’s information gathering skills aren’t anything to scoff about. She’s been supporting Granzeus from its inner circle for quite a while,” said Lu.
“Martha, Lu’s complimenting you! Then, okay, okay! I’m too much of a whiny daughter for all this. Is it okay if I just trash the entire wedding proposal?” I asked. “Well…hahaha. I would expect no less from a girl I helped raise. Go ahead, why don’t you? That’s right! Let’s have Matsuki prepare a strawberry cake for us,” said Martha.
“Yay! Prize confirmed!” I said.
“W-what, now?! Strawberry cake? Sera, me too! I deserve some of that prize, too!” said Lu.
“All right! This is now officially a planning committee!! I have a feeling there might be a bloodbath when Brother gets here, so let’s wrap it up, quickly!” I said.
“All right!” said Martha and Lu, together.
◇◇◇
As I knocked on the door to the drawing-room, Enrique opened the door. He looked at me, widened his eyes, and smiled in surprise.
“Master, Lady Serafiona has returned,” said Enrique.
I stepped into the room, following Enrique.
“Father, I’ve just arrived home,” I said.
“Welcome back, Serafiona!” said Father. His majestic aura disappeared instantly. He rose with light movements, hugged me in his arms, and kissed me on the forehead.
“Serafi, what a wonderful dress,” Father whispered in my ear.
“Father, I’m about to play a little trick, so get ready, okay?” I whispered back.
“Hm?! …Yes, I’m looking forward to it,” he whispered.
As we finished whispering to each other and broke our embrace, I saw a man and a woman I had never seen before. They looked over at us, dumbfounded.
This man… It was probably Count Larick. He had blonde hair, combed back, and was standing with his arms loosely crossed. His clothes were a bit gaudy, and his tastes didn’t seem to agree with mine.
The woman had her hair tied up high, and wore a dress with pink and gold lacing. She was fully dressed up! Well, apparently, she had always been infatuated with Father, so that was understandable, but her tastes were completely opposite of Father’s…
I was wearing a lavender dress with sheer frills layered like sweet peas. It was from Marcus’s new spring line of dresses! It hadn’t been distributed anywhere, yet. Marcus would only make lavender dresses on special orders from trusted customers, too. It was a color that even the queen wouldn’t be able to get her hands on.
“This gentle shade is perfect on you, Serafiona. Did you have it made?” asked Father.
“Yes, Father! Grandmother really knows what I like… I love it!” I said.
“Oh, wow! You start off by praising Elza. She’s an unbeatable, unparalleled substitute for a mother, so anyone else would be useless, you say!” said Lu.
“With just a dress… She takes a preemptive strike. Impressive… Hm? She’s got some garish accessories in her hair, too,” said Asu.
Huh? Why do I hear Asu’s voice? I thought. I looked up at the top of a shelf, and I saw Asu there in his mini-size, grinning down at me and sitting next to Lu.
Asu really did come flying in any time he caught a whiff of anything he thought smelled interesting.
“Oh? Do we have guests?” I asked, acting as a perfect lady and walking beside Father as I let him escort me. I sat down, elegantly.
“Oh, Sera’s taken on some extremely good manners, here. I’ll have to report this to Gilan,” said Asu.
“Ah, yeah. She’s publicly displaying that nothing is better than a daughter as a partner in public. Sera’s really pushing the point, right from the start,” said Ly.
“Yes, this is Count Larick, who I’ve known for some time, and his younger sister,” said Father.
“It is a pleasure to meet you. I’m Serafiona Trundle Granzeus,” I said, bowing gracefully and introducing myself.
“Oh, hold on! She’s thrown in her middle name, which she doesn’t use very often! Anyone who’s not an idiot would pick up on the fact that Sera’s not just some villainess daughter who will go off to fight somewhere. She’s the future ruler of Trundle,” said Lu.
“Is she going for a double strike, here? Sera’s much more serious about this than I expected. Haha, she’s progressed quite a lot,” said Asu.
Lu and Asu talking were actually quite annoying. They knew that only I could hear them, so they were taking advantage of it and chattering away…
“A-Ah, yes. It’s a pleasure to meet you. Well… Count Granzeus, consider me surprised. Your daughter’s grown up to be a lovely lady,” said Count Larick.
“Thank you. My children are my treasures. It’s not just my wife that I love deeply. If someone tried to separate me from my children, I’d probably end up slaughtering them,” said Father.
“What?!” cried Count Larick and his sister.
“…Sera’s Father a lot more unstable than I thought. I’ll have to notify Gilan about this, too. He will be Gilan’s father-in-law, after all,” said Asu.
“I guess Isaac’s been pushed to his limits, too,” said Lu.
“By the way, Count Larick, the fact that you came all the way out here, despite the bitterly cold winter this year, must mean that you are here to discuss the recent snowstorm disaster that has befallen the Mueller District, recently?” I asked.
“Excuse me?” said Count Larick.
“After all, many people have lost their homes to the crushing snow, and their supply lines have been cut off. They are seeking help. As the Minister of Finance, my father hasn’t had any time to sleep, and he’s been desperately searching for a source of funds to help the dire situation. You must have come up with an idea! How wonderful!” I said.
“Whoa! Do you see how Sera’s looking up at her guests with glittering puppy eyes? What a sly move! If I didn’t know better, I would say that this is an unusually bold move! Isn’t that right, Asu?” asked Lu.
“She’s made it quite difficult for them to tell her, an innocent young lady, that they have actually come for some silly marriage proposal. By the way, what’s going to happen with this Mueller District that she just mentioned?” asked Asu.
“Well, it’s a district that’s close to the Granzeus lands. Sera, Laruza, and I will probably go provide aid for them tomorrow,” said Lu.
“Oh! So you’re starting to understand the duties of a Heavenly Beast, eh, Lu?” asked Asu.
“Shut up. You’re annoying,” said Lu.
The annoying ones are the both of you! I thought.[Read this novel and other amazing translated novels from the original source at the “Novel Multiverse dot com” website @ novelmultiverse.com]
