After speaking to Father, I put my feelings behind me.
I had been worried about my life, but at the end of the day, I was just a newly graduated cadet in the military.
I still thought Serafi and Nick were doing so well that they were hard to look at, but everyone had different struggles. I decided that I would make sure that things stayed stable at home so that the two of them could continue with their progress. I knew that Father, who was so similar to me, would support me in my endeavors. Sake drinking sessions? He would join me for those, too. I didn’t have to be afraid of becoming lonely.
I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the fact that I had Father by my side.
Oh, yes, that one time… I’m glad I invited him to the culture festival… Even though it was really embarrassing.
As my shoulders loosened up and I rolled over on my bed, I heard a knocking at the window. When I opened up the curtains, I saw a little orange bird on the windowsill. I hurriedly opened the window and looked out.
“Alma!”
When I looked down, I saw Nick, dressed in a green cape, for the first time in about a month! In a flurry, I left the room, ran down the stairs, and leaped out of the foyer.
“Nick!”
I opened the front gate.
Nick wrapped his arms around me and tightly squeezed me in a hug.
“Ah… I’m back, Alma,” said Nick.
“W-welcome… back,” I said.
I had never experienced anything like this before, and it was hard for me to get any words out.
“Ah, Alma! I’m finally home. You smell so good, Alma! You’ve just taken a bath, haven’t you?” said Nick.
Nick curled up around me and rubbed his head on my shoulder. Unlike his usual self, he wasn’t very composed. I wondered if he had been on a rather tough mission.
Nick was a bit dusty, his hair was messy, and his face was dirty… He had come straight to where I was.
“Are you injured? Did you lose weight?” I asked, starting to regain my composure. I looked Nick over from head to toe.
“Yeah, well, nothing to worry about,” said Nick.
“That means you’re injured…” I said.
“Well, that’s because Matt-san brought me along for his A-rank mission. Of course I’m going to push myself, a little bit,” said Nick.
“What?? Why would you do something so crazy?!” I asked.
Nick suddenly pouted.
“If I don’t do at least that much, we won’t be on the same level, you know? You’re the daughter of the noble, Prime Minister McGregor, and you’re from a prodigious and hard-working family, and on top of all that, you’re so pretty… An orphan like me… I have to become an S-rank as soon as possible… Or else I’ll have everything taken away from me,” said Nick.
“Wait, what?” I asked.
Nick felt inferior to me…?
“N-Nick, you’re so many times stronger and kinder than me…” I said.
“Cut it out alreadyyy!”
I didn’t know when he got there, but Father was standing at the entrance with his arms crossed, glaring at us.
“What are you two doing at my house’s entrance, clinging to each other like that! Nicholas-kun! I can’t allow my daughter to be with a man who comes to visit a lady at such an unseemly hour!”
“S-sorry, sir!” said Nick.
“Alma! It’s not proper to leave the house in pajamas! Oh my god! You’ll disturb the neighbors! Hurry up and come inside for a moment,” said Father.
“Y-yes sir,” Nick and I said, together.
As we got inside, Father was fuming mad, and he sequestered himself to his office.
“Alma, your father is right. I’ll come back, later. Will you be here, tomorrow?” asked Nick.
“Yes. I’m glad I came here today instead of going back to the barracks,” I said.
“I was really happy when I saw the light on in your room, too! I wanted to see you, even if it was just for a moment. I’m glad my wish was granted.”
I had wanted to see Nick today, too. My wish had been granted, as well.
“Let’s go to the school campus for old times’ sake tomorrow, and eat lunch at PoluPolu. I’ll treat you with some of the money I made from this mission. I have a lot I want to tell you about from this job, and I want to hear about what you’ve been up to, too. I think I can depend on Gil-san to protect you from other guys, but…”[Read this novel and other amazing translated novels from the original source at the “Novel Multiverse dot com” website @ novelmultiverse.com]
“Huh?”
He was talking about being protected from other guys, but I hadn’t really been doing much besides secretarial work and mock-fights. I wondered what he was talking about.
Not only that, Nick was casually calling His Excellency, “Gil-san”… Ah, well. For Nick, the Trundle Guild was his second family, too, after all.
Then, I thought of something.
“If we put out a notice, maybe it would be better if we got everyone together for a guild lunch?” I asked.
“Nah. I want to be alone with you, for once.”
That meant tomorrow was…. a date. This might be the first time… My face suddenly felt very hot.
To distract from my embarrassment, I said, “H-here’s a souvenir for you! I went to the little dragon’s swamp, and Maru found it. I was told that it’s called Orion’s Fruit.”
I gave Nick the last one while repeating the explanation given to me by the guild leader.
“Seriously?! That’s amazing! Are you sure you want to give me something so precious?”
“I already had some in the forest. I gave one to Father, too, and if you eat this one, it’ll make Maru and Shu happy.”
“All right, thanks! I’ll split it with the boss and Tom-san, since it’s so rare… You’re so generous Alma… You’re always putting me and Serafi and the others first… But I guess that casual generosity you have is… It relaxes me. I love it.”
Nick pulled me close to his big body, and as his face was above my body, he… gave me a kiss.
“Hey, Alma, would you show me some love, sometimes, too? Would that be okay?”
Nick’s orange eyes looking at me were many times warmer than they usually were… I nodded rapidly in response to his question.
Nick wrapped up the Orion’s Fruit carefully, and looking many times livelier than he was when he got there, he waved his hand and went home.
Father looked out from his office window and glared at Nick as he walked off.
I gently put a finger to my lips. I was a simple girl. I wondered what I should wear tomorrow.

“Alma-chaaan! I missed you so muuuch!”
The next morning, after doing everything I could think of to pretty myself up, as I went downstairs to the dining room, I was roughly hugged by Serafi.
“Gyah! Serafi, you’re choking me! I give up, I give up!”
“Almaaa!”
“Alu!”
Maru and Shu had come along, too, not to be left out. I felt a little bit dazed. Maru and Shu jumped from Serafi’s shoulder to mine, and they started licking both my cheeks at once, and my makeup came off cleanly on those spots. I had spent an hour on that makeup and it was erased in two seconds.
“Good morning, Serafiona-sama. Holy Spirits. Welcome, welcome!”
Father greeted them heartily as he made breakfast!
“Oh, Alma-papa, don’t call me Serafiona-sama! I’m sweetheart Alma’s best, best, best friend. You know that!” said Serafiona, lightly slapping him on the arm.
“Ah… Your friendly nature is a spitting image of Lilufiona… Haha, you’re right. Serafiona-chan!” said Father, looking away and smiling as he spoke. My best, best, best friend was on such friendly terms with my father, and that made me… happy.
“Yeah… This handsome old man has been smiling all morning, absolutely shining with happiness… But my face is built the same as Cecil’s… Actually, never mind…”
“Sera… First of all, wipe the blood from your nose. I’m going to tell Gilan…”
My plans for a romantic (maybe) date were thus destroyed in just one moment.
I hadn’t seen Serafi in about two months, though. I was thoroughly overjoyed that she had come to visit. I really was happy.
I still felt like I couldn’t do a lot of things, but the fact that my love, Nick, and Serafi could safely make their way back to me made me want to work hard to make a stable life! I swore to myself that I would do so.
“Serafi! Welcome back!”
“Thanks, Alma-chan!”[Read this novel and other amazing translated novels from the original source at the “Novel Multiverse dot com” website @ novelmultiverse.com]
