- Volume 9 Chapter 162 - (Third Publication Celebration!) Independence Day 4 We Talked About Punishment
Translator: Jasper Kadowaki | Editor: NovelMultiverse
Today marks the day that the third edition of this short novel is published!
As I watched the parade while asking Gilan about this and that, I learned so much and it was actually quite fun. From time to time, I stood up to receive salutes of honor from the soldiers, and they were so impressive that my heart skipped a beat.
Not only that, the countrymen who had gathered at the parade looked upon Gilan with such warmth that I was moved to the point of almost crying.
Gilan and I had changed significantly from the <time shift> that had occurred.
During the celebration party that followed the parade, I helped welcome the people who had come to pay their dues to Gilan. To make up for my expressionless companion, I smiled so much that my cheeks began to hurt.
Yamada-kun had come from Marsh in Prime Minister Tabuchi’s stead. As we recalled the recent incident over Tabuchi’s daughter being kidnapped, I went to give him a fist pound, but Gilan stiffened and pulled me back. I remembered that Galle was a nation of propriety, and had to pull back.
After all of that, I had my first dance with Gilan. As I twirled about, people caught glimpses of the decorations in my hair that Asu had provided, and despite my best efforts, I did end up standing out in a bad way.
As the celebrations started ramping up, I returned to my seat and discovered that Lu had been eating snacks and making a mess at the table.
“Lu…” I said.
“Sera! The snacks over here in Galle have some pretty strong spiciness and it’s pretty interesting!” said Lu.
Asu interjected hurriedly, saying, “Lu, have you been testing the food for poison or gorging yourself? Mere snacks aren’t spicy here, you know?”
“…What?? Well, yesterday, I said I liked spicy food…” said Lu.
In the end, none of the food was poisoned.
Galle had indeed… calmed down.
I managed to get through the entire party on an empty stomach, and since I wasn’t used to this, I got tired, eventually. Though it was something that didn’t happen often, I ended up staying over at a guest house at the royal palace, and I went to sleep with a congested looking Lu.
◇◇◇
Galle had a national holiday that lasted until today. Asu had ordered me to take one extra day off, and I wondered where he planned to take me.
I made sure to eat plenty of breakfast (this time around, Arthur had tested it for poison), and before we left, I visited Gilan in his main office. Gilan was waiting for me, along with Asu, Liguido, and Sakaki. He had a grim look on his face. I realized that he had recently heard about what had happened the previous day.
“Good morning, everyone,” I said.
“Princess. Lu-sama. Good morning,” said Liguido and Sakaki at once, with bowed heads. I bowed, in turn, and sat down in a chair.
They raised their heads, and… Sakaki looked completely emaciated… It was as if he had exhausted all of his magical and physical strength…
As I gazed upon Sakaki with a suspicious eye, he waved my look away with one hand. Apparently, he didn’t want to make it a point of conversation.
“Princess – please pay no mind towards Sakaki. He simply went under some educational exercises, recently,” said Liguido.
“Huh?… Is that right…” Lu and I said, together. Neither of us asked any further, though. For now, (pain and fatigue, fly off, and don’t come back!) I just wished for his recovery by casting a small charm on him.
“Sera – Darrel caused you trouble, it seems. I apologize on his behalf,” said Gilan, bowing his head. It was just as I had imagined.
“Oh, well, Lu was with me. It wasn’t a big deal. I’m glad the problem’s come to surface, at last, though,” I said, shrugging. Gilan smiled, sadly.
Liguido coughed and gathered his thoughts.
“I must say, I bear some responsibility for this ordeal, and so I will be paying three months’ worth of my income toward the country’s treasury to atone,” said Liguido.
“Isn’t that a bit much?” I asked. I didn’t know how much he was earning, though.
“I allowed the future empress to fall into a dangerous situation. I let my guard down, since the princess is, thank god, not just an everyday person,” said Liguido.
“…I am an every day person though, you know?” I said. How rude!
“And when I think about the fact that I dampened the festive mood within Galle with this… Well, we’ve decided on how to deal with it, internally. However, it wouldn’t be right for me, someone who has received punishment on this occasion, to decide what happens to Lord Darrel. And so, we are in the midst of deciding Lord Darrel’s fate,” said Liguido. So they settled the matter internally without holding any proper trials… Well, I couldn’t say that I didn’t understand. The people of Galle were fed up with the turmoil within the aristocracy at this point, after all. It made sense that just as things seemed to be going well in the government as Gilan had finally taken the throne, any kind of disturbance like this being uncovered would only weaken the current consolidation of power.
Well, since Lord Darrel had acted out on me, not the people of the country, things would be fine if I just accepted that this didn’t have to go public… And I was fine with that. It seemed like he was just trying to intimidate, anyways.
However, the truth would always come out, and since this was a secret that involved the imperial aristocracy, when the truth was revealed, it wouldn’t just be glossed over.
Did Gilan really expect me to decide Lord Darrel’s fate, though? Did he really want me to pass judgment on his family member? Not only that – he had just been betrayed by his blood relative. Did he really expect me to take on the heavy burden of deciding what Lord Darrel deserved?
That was… unacceptable.
“Wait just a second. I’m the victim of the crime, here. You’re planning on passing judgment without a trial, right? All right, then, do I even have the authority to decide what the punishment shall be?”
“…Yes. It has already been decided in a cabinet meeting that you, Serafiona, the princess, have the same rights as the emperor.”
“…Sera, what is your judgment?” said Gilan, looking at me with worry in his eyes.
It had to be a harsh enough punishment to satisfy everyone, but also, I didn’t want to hurt Gilan… For example, something like the most painful burden that I myself had had to uphold up to this point…
Huh? Oh! I had the perfect idea before me all along.
I laughed softly, and said, “I’ve got it! Banishment! And I’ll have him thrown into the trundle Guild’s midst! I’ll have him experience a kind of training that’s in some ways worse than hell itself!”
“Ah… I see,” said Lu, grinning evilly.
“A guild?” asked Liguido, confusedly.
“I would have the trundle guild snap his will into pieces, and then he will pay his dues from there. The Trundle Guild won’t care whether he’s of a royal family or that he’s in line for the throne. He’ll have no say in any matter unless he proves himself physically capable,” I said.
“Well, their former ruler is that Lioness, after all.”
Liguido-san? He’s talking about Grandmother when he says “Lioness”, right? I wasn’t just going to forget about that, but I decided that I would ask him about it later.
“He will probably lament, saying that he would have been better off in the dungeons of Galle. Well, he does share with Gilan, and so while there is some worry for him, he should be able to build himself back up as something better after about a year. We can decide if he should be let back into Galle after that,” I said.
“You seem quite confident in that decision.”
“That’s how I was raised, after all. If he can’t be reformed in that strict but warm environment, I’ll deal with his punishment, after that,” I said.
I figured that I would dirty my hands with this situation, even as the empress.
The room was silent, for a moment.
“Gilan! We’re in peaceful times, right now. You need to allow this judgment on him. If you allow him mercy now, it’ll become a habit that will hurt you later on!”
Gilan seemed to think hard about the issue for a moment, and then nodded.
“All right,” he said.
“Well then, it’s decided. I’ll send the head of the Trundle Guild a letter of greeting and a payment. We’ll send Lord Darrel off to them, and ask them to deal with him for us,” said Liguido, wrapping up the conversation.
“I’ll send my letter of support, as well,” I said.
This was good. At least this one issue was dealt with, for now. Grandpa Sieg – I’m sorry to send you a strange request, yet again! But you’re the one who set Cecil straight, after all!… You have Grandmother with you, too!
“Shall we go, then, Sera?” asked Asu, spreading his wings.
“All right. Now that that’s settled, for now, I’ll be going on my date with Asu!” I said, getting up with a little grunt.
“…Date?” asked Gilan, furrowing his brow even more than he had, before.
“Princess, where will you be going?” asked Sakaki.
Sakaki-san, why do you ask me that, so fretfully? Now that I thought about it, I hadn’t even heard where we were going, yet. I looked over at Asu.
“To my holy lands,” said Asu.
“Apparently, we’ll be going to the Holy Mountain Beluga,” I said.
“To the Holy Mountain… Only someone like you would be invited to such a place, Princess. Lord Gilan, please go along with her. Now that we’ve settled the issue with Lord Darrel, you are free for the rest of the day,” said Liguido, returning to his usual self.
“Hm, yes. Gilan should come, too,” said Asu.
“That goes without saying,” said Gilan. He got up and embraced me with his left arm, and with his right arm, he conjured a whirlwind. Whoa! Is this what it’s like to be inside a tornado? Was this how Gilan and Asu always traveled? When I looked at Gilan’s shoulder, I saw Asu, there, grinning. At that moment, all I could do was grab on tightly to Gilan to avoid being swept off.
“W-Wait! I’m going too,” said Lu. “I wasn’t invited, but I’m going, you know? Sera and I are of one heart… I said, hey! Don’t you dare leave me behind!”[Read this novel and other amazing translated novels from the original source at the “Novel Multiverse dot com” website @ novelmultiverse.com]
