Sera – Eight years old, and still just an average little kid. Papan and Brother have a Remembrance Session.
On the morning after my birthday, Brother always left home for a few hours. It didn’t matter if it was raining and freezing cold out, or even if it was snowing.
I was so busy being loved, and so full of thoughts about myself, that I didn’t even notice.
Year after year, when that day came, it also brought the death-day anniversary of my mother, Lilufiona. A few hours after I was born, late after midnight, she passed away.
After the wild celebrations of the day before, my Brother would usually don his coat in the early hours of the morning before I woke up, and quietly leave the manor. I saw this the day after I turned eight when I realized that he was leaving. I made myself undetectable and went out to follow him with Lu.
“A grave… Is this your mother, Sera?” asked Lu.
“Yeah…” I said.
Brother seemed to be quietly speaking to Mother, and it didn’t seem right to go up and talk to him. This was Brother’s personal time.
Without making a sound, I returned to the manor. Lu erased any traces that we were there.
This may seem cold to me, but I didn’t hold any significant feelings toward my Mother. After all, I never knew her. I also never seemed to long for a mother’s love, as I was already receiving plenty of love from Father, Brother, Grandmother, Martha, Enrique, and many other people.
Brother was different, though.
After Father and Grandmother were reconciled, and the sad history of Trundle was not a taboo subject anymore, I felt that I had to help heal my family’s wounds!
After that day, on my mother’s death-day, I always asked Father and Brother about Mother with no ill feelings attached. At first, I was doing it for Brother’s sake, but after a while, the tradition started to warm my heart, too.
“Brother, was Mother beautiful?”
“What?! I was just a little kid, too, so I didn’t really ever see Mother in those terms… Of course, she looked like Grandmother.”
“Well, then, she must have been stunning!”
Grandmother was quite beautiful at the age of sixty. If you were to add the youth of a twenty-something-year-old on top of that…
“Father, please tell me about how you met Mother!” I said.
“What?! Hmm… Well, I guess you’re at the age where you want to know about things like that… Well, you know me as a civil servant, right? But during the last war, I was called up for military service. I knew that I wouldn’t be acknowledged as a worthy mage in even the lowest level battalion. It was way too foolish to fight on my own, though. So, I entered the army as a reserve troop.”
“Wow, really?” I asked.
I was stuffing my cheeks with cookies, and so was Lu, perched on my head. I sat on Brother’s lap, and he laughed at how I was sputtering crumbs.
“I had already taken up my seat as a Count,” continued Father, “and at that point, I was going to all sorts of places on assignment. I was finally called upon as a mage to support the head general. That was my job.”
“You mean to support Grandpa?”
“Yes. Now that I think of it, your Grandfather, the head of the Trundle Guild at the time, was basically a military leader and participated in meetings with his Excellency to plan battles. Laruza, you had already introduced yourself, to them, too, right? Well, anyway, at one of these meetings, there was a beautiful woman standing beside his Excellency. At first, I thought that she might be his secretary or something, but I changed my mind about that, early on. She looked at me with those rare black eyes, and threw me a look full of drive and ambition!”
Papan laughed softly as he must have remembered something from that time.
“And she challenged me, saying, ‘If you expect to fight with me on the battlefield, I demand that you prove yourself by fighting me, first!’ My future father-in-law, His Excellency, had his head in his hands when she said that.”
“So it was like that, huh?” said Lu, sighing disappointedly. As he sighed, an avalanche of crumbs fell from his mouth and onto my head.
Brother applied cleaning magic to me without missing a beat.
…But anyways, here she was in the story, the hot-blooded lady! Mother was always a true woman of Trundle culture, after all.
Lu was apparently full now, and he leaped down from my head and curled up at the fireplace. He looked to be nothing but a cat. Then again, he was a cat, wasn’t he? Cats were the real kings of Tw*tter, in my old world.
“Then what, then what?” I asked.
“Lilufi was strong, of course. She’s the daughter of those two parents, after all. She was young, though, and she refused to fight dirty like I was. So, in the end, I won,” said Father.
Wow. Papan didn’t let this daughter of his superior win… Then again, if he had gone easy on the hot-blooded lady, she may have gone into an even bigger rage. He made a wise decision.
“However, since I managed to best Lilufi, they started treating me better in the army. They realized that I was a useful soldier, and the army acknowledged my strength. If there was dissension amongst the troops, there was no way they could work together well, right? Our battle was a plan to smooth things out between my comrades and me. I was very grateful.”
“Yes… Mother was very clever and sportsmanlike… She could acknowledge that she lost, even if her opponent was a child.”[Read this novel and other amazing translated novels from the original source at the “Novel Multiverse dot com” website @ novelmultiverse.com]
Brother looked like he was able to break into tears… He pursed his lips tightly.
“After that, some things happened, and… I got married to her, and started living at her house,” said Father.
“Whaaat! Father! That’s crucial! That’s where you have to include the most detail! What made you fall in love with her?” I asked.
“Of course, I loved everything about your mother… Ah, well that’s not true. There was one thing I didn’t like about her,” said Father. His expression grew serious.
“I thought I was more competent when it came to hand-to-hand combat. While we were in a situation that called for that kind of fighting, she jumped in front of me and was cut down by an enemy. I was in the middle of conserving my strength and was waiting for a good opportunity to strike. Lilufiona believed that it was a fighter’s job to defend a mage. She smiled as she went down. I was pissed off, thinking “Quit messing around!” She didn’t realize how loved she was. She didn’t realize how many people would despair over her death. I froze… thinking that I wouldn’t be able to go on without her if she died.”
…Despite being a woman! Then again, I couldn’t be thinking of the situation like that. She was a soldier on the battlefield, after all. I guessed a strong person didn’t think twice about putting their body on the line for a loved one…
“When I told her how I felt about that incident later on, she got pissed off at me, in return. She said that I was in the wrong for hiding my abilities in the first place. She said that even if she was loved by many, none of that mattered at all to her as long as she wasn’t loved by the one man that she was in love with.”
“Whoa, Mother really was strong,” I said.
“Yeah, she was really cool,” said Brother.
“Absolutely. I was so enamored by how cool she was that I was swept off my feet, and I proposed to her, right away… Ah, this is more embarrassing than I thought it would be. It’s strange talking to you about it, Serafi. You look just like her.”
“Huh? I look like Mother?” I asked.
I looked just like Brother, and I thought Brother was a spitting image of Papan. All the more because they shared the same black hair.
“…Those sincere black eyes of yours that could never lie will always straighten my posture,” said Father.
“That’s true. These eyes that Father and I have a lot of dishonesty in them, you know? We can do some very underhanded things if that’s what needs to be done to protect our family,” said Brother, touching his forehead to mine and looking down into my eyes, happily.
“That can’t be true! You both have such beautiful green eyes!” I said. I used my thumbs and index fingers to spread Brother’s eyes open wide.
“There are many different kinds of green, though. There’s green like an emerald, and then there’s also green like sludge. If it means saving Laruza or you, Serafiona, I’m willing to taint these green eyes of mine. I don’t intend to let anything take a loved one away from me ever again while I’m alive, whether my opponent is royalty or a holy spirit.”
Father took a gulp of his glass of Granzeus whiskey. The ice clinked against the sides.
I got off of Brother’s knees, and put my arms around Father’s neck. He put his glass down and gently lifted me up in a hug. I gave Papan a kiss on his eyelids.
“I don’t want that to happen! I want Brother’s and your eyes to stay as clear as they are now. Please!” I said.
Father returned my kiss with a peck on my forehead, and Brother smiled at me kindly, too… Still, I didn’t realize what it meant that the two of them didn’t reply until I got into bed that night.
The next day, a small painting had been hung in the parlor. It was a painting of a woman with chestnut-colored hair and black eyes. This young woman was wearing a dress the same emerald color as my father’s eyes, and she was holding a fan that looked like the same kind as the one Grandmother had. She was looking straight at me and smiling.
She was smiling at me as she crushed a bloody bear underfoot.
“…That’s terrifying! Is this a painting of a real scene?” said Lu, “I don’t even understand how you could ask an artist to paint a scene like that!”
“Really? I think it’s very striking,” I said.
Lu was tucking his tail between his legs and shaking like a leaf, but I felt a sense of closeness when seeing the playfulness of Mother in this painting.
And then, I had what felt like it might be a foreboding thought. I felt a little sad at the fact that she had the foresight to leave behind her smile for those that would come after her.
Would I be able to defend those whom I love, like mother, instead of always being defending by them? Will I ever meet someone who would be willing to throw their life on the line for me?
Could an “evil villainess” like me ever find even a single person to love, and tie my future to?
Oh, now that I thought of it, I wondered if Gilan, whom I love so much, and who proposed to me when I was so tiny, was doing well. He went back to Galle with Asu, and it’s been so long.
His Excellency’s eyes look like my emotionally dead eyes after I was convicted for my crimes. I’m sure it’s just a crazy thought, but I can’t help but to feel a connection with him.
I didn’t know what his Excellency wished for in the stars, but his wishes were his hopes for the future, and I thought it would be good for him to have someone by his side in his future.
“I don’t know why you care about those two so much, but to me, they’re just an impudent pair. Leave ‘em!” said Lu.
It’s true that Asu was not part of my previous existence, or at least, I didn’t ever see him. In this existence, though, it looked like His Excellency and Asu do form a pair.
“Yeah… You’re right,” I said.
It was just like how Lu and I made a pair, as well.
…But how long would that last?
It was a thought that threatened to creep into my mind, but I threw it away from me, as far as I could manage.
For now, just like in my old existence, I would put my hands together and pray.
“Mother, please watch over Father and Brother, whom I love so much. Please protect them with all your strength.”
Mother would always watch over us from above the fireplace, smiling on us as if to put our hearts at ease.
While stomping out a bear, of course.[Read this novel and other amazing translated novels from the original source at the “Novel Multiverse dot com” website @ novelmultiverse.com]
