I’m a humiliated, incompetent person, but I alone can talk to dragons, so I can choose all the SSS skills and loophole items I want to. I’m going to become famous and respected, so, to the people who humiliated me – Go die in a ditch - Chapter 17

“Cyril-san, I have a letter for you,” said the postman.
“A letter?” I asked.
I took the letter from the postman in the lobby and furrowed my brow.
It had been years since I had last received a letter.
On top of that, letters were very expensive. That went without saying, though. It took one person’s dedicated labor to deliver a single letter. In other words, just to send one letter, it cost a sum of money equal to the wages of that one person.
Therefore, most letters were delivered once a good number of them were gathered into one load to be carried at once. That was how the cost of delivering one letter was decreased. That was the only way the post office could stay in business. Even with this practice in place, it was quite a big deal to receive a letter.
I cut open the envelope and pulled out the contents.
“Rose-san?” I muttered out loud. She was the one who had sent the letter. Officially, though, it was from City Hall. The letter said that there was something she needed to discuss with me, so I should go to see her before the day was over.
“Hmm…” I said.
The letter had not said what she wanted to discuss. It just said to show up.
“Master, are we going to work?” asked Louise, who had come out from the dragon shed. She looked a little sleepy – as she usually did.
“…It looks like I have other errands to run, today, so you can just stay here and sleep,” I said.
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“All right. I’m going back to sleep, then, master,” said Louise, returning to the dragon shed. That probably meant that she would sleep in until nighttime.
Usually, I would go to City Hall with Louise and take a look at the mission requests posted there, but today, I wasn’t sure what to expect, so I decided to leave Louise at home.

I sat down in front of Rose in a meeting room at City Hall.
“Sorry for calling you out here, so suddenly,” said Rose.
“That’s okay. Did something happen, though?” I asked.
“Yes. Actually… Your guild reached Level 3,” said Rose.
“…Oh,” I said, slightly surprised. I didn’t expect that to be what Rose wanted to talk to me about.
“Level 3?” I asked.
“Yes,” said Rose.
“And… Why did you call me, here?” I asked. I was surprised at first, but now, I started to feel a creeping sense of alarm.
Our guild had gone up a level. That wasn’t something that would warrant being called out to City Hall. Rose had gone to the trouble of sending me a letter to call me out here, though. I wondered if that meant something was wrong.
“It’s extremely unusual for a one-person guild to reach Level 3 in such a short amount of time,” said Rose.
“Really?”
“Yeah, for a one-person guild to reach Level 3… Well, that would usually take around three months.”
“…Really.”
I could only mutter the same word, solemnly.
“Whadja do?” asked Rose.
“I didn’t do anything,” I said.
I understood, now. I had been called on for questioning on how our guild had raised our level, so extraordinarily quickly. I understood, but I wasn’t able to explain it.
“I’ve just been working, as usual,” I said.
“Did you get a bunch of new members?”
“No, not really. I got one new dragon, though.”
“Which means… You have three dragons, now?”
“Yes.”
“One person and three dragons. Those aren’t numbers that would explain your sudden increase in level.”
“Well, I don’t know what to tell you.”
“Just give me something. You don’t have any ideas on what might explain this situation?”
“I don’t.”
“All right…” said Rose, looking conflicted.
“Is something wrong?” I asked.
“I wouldn’t say wrong, but as far as one-person guilds go, this is definitely the fastest growth in recorded history.”
“Fastest in recorded history?”
I had never heard those words applied to me before. Even as I said them out loud, it didn’t feel like they were really meant for me.
“Even if it’s something that seems trivial, do you have any ideas as to what might have caused this?” asked Rose.
“Well, when it comes to trivial things… Maybe our guild name?”
“Guild name?”
“Dragons First. It means we value dragons and their lives,” I said, earnestly. That was all I could think of that set our guild apart from others.
Of course, there was also the fact that I could understand dragons’ speech, but that wasn’t the crux of our guild. The biggest thing that set us apart from other guilds was that we valued dragons so highly.
“That you value dragons and their lives, huh?” said Rose.
“Yes.”
“I can’t imagine that would make a difference.”
“Even if it doesn’t make a difference, I do still think everyone should do the same.”
“That’s not likely,” said Rose, with a faint, sad smile.
That came as no surprise.
“Well, anyway,” said Rose, “You’ve gone up to Level 3. That means you can use a guild storehouse, now.”
“Guild storehouse?”
“It’s a storehouse that only guild members can enter.”
“Huh,” I said. It seemed interesting.
“Use it well,” said Rose.
“All right. Thank you very much.”
☆
I arrived at the guild storehouse outside of town.
From the outside, it just looked like a regular shed. However, it had had magic applied to it so that only dragon knights and dragons from our guild could enter. Anyone registered to the guild could enter easily, but anyone without registration wouldn’t be able to get in, no matter what they tried.
Strictly speaking, one could get in by breaking through the magic with even stronger magic, but this was punishable by an immediate life sentence, so almost no one ever tried.
After checking out our guild storehouse, I headed home. However, on the way home, I unfortunately ran into Rui.
I was walking down a street lined with many restaurants, and I unexpectedly crossed paths with him. Rui was glaring right at me.
What’s with him? I wondered. [Read this novel and other amazing translated novels from the original source at the “Novel Multiverse dot com” website @ novelmultiverse.com]
“I heard you reached Level 3?” he asked.
“Word travels quickly, huh? But, yeah, we did,” I said.
“How’d you cheat the system?”
“Excuse me?”
“You obviously cheated. You’ve got one human and three dragons. There’s no way you could have raised your level that quickly.”
“Hmm.”
Rui was saying the same thing that Rose had. Neither of them could believe that a one-person guild could raise its level that quickly without increasing its membership drastically.
The difference between their reactions was that Rose had acknowledged the possibility of an “irregularity”, but Rui had completely doubted me from the beginning, and considered me a cheater, through and through.
It was fine that he doubted me, but one thing did bother me.
“I never cheated,” I said. It didn’t feel good to be accused of cheating, so I decided that I should at least stand up for myself in that respect.
“Don’t lie,” said Rui.
“I’m not lying. And besides,” I said, looking at Rui with a piercing gaze, “If I cheated, the government would see right through it. Do you really think the government would be fooled that easily?”
“Then how did you level up so quickly?”
“Who knows? I’ve just been going about my work like I always do, so I don’t know.”
“Like you always do?”
“Putting Dragons First,” I said.
“Don’t bullshit me!” yelled Rui, as if he could blow his lid at any moment.
People passing by around us flinched at our loud argument in the middle of the street, and they distanced themselves from us, not wanting to get involved.
“I’m not bullshitting you, though,” I said.
“…Argh, whatever!”
After glaring at me for a bit, Rui realized that his actions were causing a scene. He huffed at me through his nose as if he couldn’t be bothered with dealing with me, and walked away.
If he didn’t want to deal with me, he shouldn’t have come at me in the first place, I thought.
☆
After parting ways with Rui, I arrived back home.
I wanted to bring the dragons over to the guild storehouse that we had just earned and test out a few things.
I especially wanted to see what Colette could do with it. Since she was a Mushkhushushu-type, her stomach was more than just a wallet – it was a mini-storehouse itself. I thought it might be interesting to see what she could do with the storehouse as a tool.
I returned home, feeling giddy with excitement, but when I got there, I saw that there was a carriage parked outside my property.
Once I got a better look, I saw that the carriage was an extravagant one. It looked familiar.
“Cyril-sama!” A woman’s voice from inside the carriage called out my name. As she called out, she half-jumped out and jogged over to me.
“Princess?!” I exclaimed.
The woman that had appeared before me was the princess who I had helped, a little while ago.
I realized that the carriage looked familiar because it was the same as the one I had rescued the princess from, when I basically saved her life.
“Oh, thank goodness. I needed to see you, Cyril-sama,” said the princess.
“Oh…”
“I have heard about your progress, Cyril-sama. I would expect no less from you.”
“My progress?”
“Yes!” said the princess, nodding and smiling widely at me.
“You have completed mission after mission, and now you have even set a record for the fastest rise to Level 3 in recorded history. You are the most talked about dragon knight in town, right now.”
“R-really?” I asked. I felt a little self-conscious.
When the princess showered me with praises like that, I couldn’t help but feel bashful.
“Ah!” I said, realizing that people around us were watching.
I might not have been, but the princess was certainly dressed in a way that would garner attention no matter where she was or what she was doing. We couldn’t stay out here, like this.
“Princess, it’s improper to talk out here. Please, come inside,” I said.
“Certainly!” she said. The princess didn’t seem to take any notice of the eyes on her as she followed me into the house.
My house didn’t have anything fancy like a meeting room, so I had to direct the princess to the living room.
I had the princess sit down, and I sat down, too, in front of her.
“So… Princess. What can I help you with, today?” I asked.
“Ah, yes. I wanted to ask you for a favor, Cyril-sama.”
“A favor?”
The princess has a favor to ask of me? I wondered. This was so intimidating that I found myself feeling on guard.
“Yes. I have come to ask you for a favor, Cyril-sama, since you are probably the greatest dragon knight out there.”
“You’ve gone too far with that compliment, princess.”
The greatest dragon knight out there… Yeah, that’s going too far, I thought.
“No, I have not! You really are!” said the princess.
“Um, well, thank you.”
Apparently, the princess really thought that highly of me. It was pointless to argue with her, so I decided to try to move the conversation forwards.
“Well, anyway, what is the favor?” I asked.
“Oh, yes, I’m sorry. Well, actually, I have a little one that I want the greatest dragon knight to take care of for me.”
“A little one to take care of?”
She didn’t mean…
“You’re talking about a dragon, right?” I asked.
“Yes!”
“Ah, okay,” I said, starting to understand the situation.
“This is a special dragon. I was hoping you could help me with its behavior,” said the princess.
“All right,” I said, slightly relieved. Yes, that was the right word to describe how I felt. I was on guard because the princess had shown up so suddenly, but it seemed like she came to me with a straightforward job.
If she wanted me to help her with a dragon, I felt I could do that. This might have been an unpopular opinion, but I thought that dragons had more sensible personalities than humans. I was confident that, since I could talk to dragons, I could do something to help.
“Are you sure you want my help?” I asked.
“Yes, I came specifically to ask for you, Cyril-sama!” the princess insisted. She seemed sincere. I was quite happy that I had such a good reputation with her.
“All right, I’ll help you,” I said.
“Ahh! Thank you so much!!!” exclaimed the princess, standing up subconsciously with joy.
“So, what type is the dragon?”
“It’s a Phoenix-type.”
“…What?” I asked, unable to believe my ears.
“The little one is a Phoenix-type.”
I was struck silent. I couldn’t believe it.
“That’s… You don’t mean…” I stuttered and gulped. “You mean the dragon type that’s also known as Child of God? That one?”
“Yes.”
I was speechless. I couldn’t respond. This wasn’t your everyday dragon.
“I believe that you are the only one who can help me with this, Cyril-san!”
The scope of the princess’s expectations and what she had asked me to do was enormous.[Read this novel and other amazing translated novels from the original source at the “Novel Multiverse dot com” website @ novelmultiverse.com]
