Amy and the Foal (Part 2)
Soon they started preparing the carriage to go back home. Amy noticed the sun setting and realized how late it had gotten. She had visited the stables after a long time so she ended up staying for much longer than she had planned.
Even though she had a maid and a knight to escort her, she was still a young lady who was not yet of age, so Marvin apologized to her for letting her stay until so late.
“I apologize for holding you back late.”
“It’s fine, I also lost track of time. Besides, today I came with this so it’s fine.”
In order to put him at ease, Amy opened up her dress’s pocket and showed it to him. It contained a special communication magic tool that Joshua had made for his family to use.
“Oh that’s one of Count Northland’s special products.”
It had a GPS function built into it, making it different from the communication tools carried by the staff of the Royal Palace. On top of that, as soon as it sensed danger it would send a notification to her father.
Although the people in the Capital were calm, and it was a safe place, Amy might still be targeted by kidnappers or highwaymen as the daughter of an aristocrat.
Also, even if she wasn’t targeted, if she got pulled into an accident it would take time to find her since search operations here were still conducted by human teams.
Her father had disregarded all costs when making it so the magical stones used in it were of the highest class when it came to purity.
Amy felt a little worried about carrying it around just because of its high cost. But it was better than walking around with a huge number of guards so she kept it in her pocket whenever she went out.
“I don’t think I will be able to come here again until after the tournament.”
“I understand. By the way, I sincerely apologize about your ruined stole.”
“Oh Marvin,I’ve already told you not to worry about that.”
“Thank you for your kindness…… As for Lennis, leave it to me, please. If something comes up I will send you a letter, as usual.”
“Ok, I will leave it to you. Well then…… hmm?”
Amy had just said goodbye to Marvin and the other staff members and was about to climb into her carriage, giving her hand to Scott to help her up, when a surprised murmur from the staff standing on the other side of the road caught her attention.
All of them were looking and pointing at the road which led to this place.
There was a rider rushing towards them on the back of a horse, but because the sun had begun to set she could tell neither the colour of the horse nor the face of the person riding it.
“Miss Amy, quickly, stand behind me!”
“Don’t worry, I will look after you.”
Scott immediately became alert and stepped forward to hide her behind his back, while Alissa pulled Amy to her side to shield her from the unknown rider.
Judging from the surprised look on the staff’s faces, it didn’t look like the rider was someone who had come on an appointment. He seemed to be a proficient rider and had already shortened the distance between them within seconds, it wouldn’t be long before he reached here.
Although the stables was at a remote place, it was still within the boundary of the Royal Palace. The doors were always guarded and there were knights stationed at places. It wasn’t a place anyone could enter easily.
…… So who was this person?
The air was tense around her and Amy’s hand instinctively went to the pendant around her neck. She squeezed it gently to soothe the sudden anxiety.
Soon the horse was close enough that Amy could finally see the face of the person sitting on it. As soon as she did so, Marvin, who was standing next to her, also let out a breath of relief and exclaimed in surprise.
“Vintus!? It’s His Highness!”
His letter had said that he wouldn’t be able to come today……
“…… Ed?”
“Thank God, I made it in time……!”
The happy voice that had called out to Amy was a little out of breath. His face showed signs of weariness, and his hair was all messed up from the wind, but there was no doubt that the person on the horse was Edward.
He brought Vintus to a halt and jumped down, handing the reins to Marvin who had rushed over quickly, and asked him to take care of the horse.
He had momentarily looked away as he did so, but his gaze soon returned back to Amy.
Then, without hesitating a bit, he headed straight towards her. Scott and Alissa quickly stood at alert, and gave a polite bow to him. However Amy was still standing in shock, her eyes blinking in surprise at his sudden arrival.
Because he had already told her in the letter. And everyone else had also said he won’t be coming.
“You said you wouldn’t be able to make it today…”
“Yes. That was the plan, but I wanted to meet you so I hurried back as soon as I could.”
Saying so, he gently took her hand in his as he always did. His eyes crinkled in a satisfied smile when she didn’t offer any protest.
“It seems like Vintus also wanted to return today, he ran like he’s never run before.”
“I-I see.”
“Amy, does that make you feel troubled?”
“Eh, no, I’m just, um, surprised.”
She had thought that she wouldn’t be able to see him today. It had made her feel disappointed…… she’d wanted to see him. And now he was standing in front of her.
Realizing that, Amy felt her face heat up.
Even her hand that was clutched in his was warm. If the sun was still out, everyone would be able to see her blush.
Amy couldn’t hide her flustered state from Edward though. A pleased smile broke onto his face as he watched her.
“Can you praise Vintus afterwards as well? He worked really hard to come see you, you know.”
“O-of course. Um, Ed, that…”
“Hm, what is it?”
My hand! I want you to let go of my hand but how can I say that when you’re smiling like that!?
“Um, that is,”
“Yes?”
“Ah…… welcome back. I’m also happy that I could see you today.”
In the end, all she could say was an ordinary greeting, welcoming him back to the Capital.
Despite that, Edward seemed to become even happier. Amy couldn’t help but smile back at him.
People say that yawning can be contagious, but I guess it applies to happiness as well, Amy thought as she headed back home in the carriage later that evening.
