Amy and the Foal (Part 1)
Amy had experienced this feeling before. When fatigue clung to your whole body. Your head felt hot and absentminded, and even though you wanted to relax your mind can’t calm down enough to do so.
Fortunately, she hadn’t felt like this in this life but had experienced this in her past life.
For example when she crammed at the last minute the day before an exam, or when she got too absorbed in a novel and stayed up all night reading.
“In other words…… a lack of sleep?”
She had often heard that sometimes changes in the environment could make it difficult to sleep, resulting in deteriorating health. There were a lot of people with particular preferences who become unable to sleep by something as small as changing their pillow.
However, Amy wondered if it was possible for this to happen to a horse.
Like other animals, horses also took small naps throughout the day.
Although they didn’t fall asleep for multiple hours like humans, a small foal could also lie down to sleep if it was in a safe environment.
But even if it didn’t lie down, it was still a good sleep for a horse if they napped while standing up. Could it be that this foal hadn’t even been able to do that?
“I see, so it’s a lack of sleep.”
“Ah, Marvin.”
Amy felt a bit flustered that Marvin had picked up on what she’d muttered to herself earlier. There was no reason for him to take her words seriously, and yet he had.
“Come to think of it, I took great care of his feed and the temperature but I didn’t pay any attention to the place where he sleeps. I must fix this immediately.”
“W-wait a moment, I just said that as a passing thought. There is nothing wrong with the stables here, I know everything is very clean and hygienic.”
“Well, it won’t hurt to look into this.”
Amy tried to stop him but Marvin had already turned to a nearby stable hand and asked him to bring the breeding record of the foal.
It arrived shortly and after perusing it they found mention that the straw in his stable at the place where he was born was mixed with wood shavings. By the way, both straw and wood shavings were commonly used as bedding for horses.
“I see. We only use straw here, I will try adding wood shaving to it and see if it works. It’s not difficult to get some right now.”
“Ah but it might not be the reason for his condition.”
“Don’t worry, Miss Amy. I feel happy just knowing I have something I can try doing.”
“Is that so? Then it’s good…… but don’t get your hopes too high. Ah, that tickles, Lennis!”
Perhaps he picked up on Marvin’s good mood, Lennis brought his nose closer to Amy’s face.
He sniffed around her hair and neck as if trying to memorize her smell. It looked like his vigilance against Amy had been lifted.
Amy was satisfied enough when he had let her touch him but now that he had bridged the gap between them by himself, she felt extremely happy.
If only there was a magic spell that could let me talk to animals, she thought longingly as she petted his neck.
How did this new place look when viewed from his blinking eyes?
Did he miss his mother, or the place where he was born?
Although he was brought to the Royal Stables on the whim of other people, she wanted him to like it here…… she couldn’t convey these words to him so she just put her forehead against his.
“Lennis, I hope you get used to this place soon.”
The foal blinked back at her. Both Amy and the people around her became relieved when they saw that he didn’t seem to dislike her closeness.
Then, suddenly, Lennis bent down, took Amy’s stole into his mouth, and began to chew on it.
“Eh?”
“Lennis!”
Marvin tried to get the cloth back but the horse moved away from the fence and crouched down with the stole still in his mouth.
“Miss Amy, you’re not hurt are you? Ah, your stole!”
“It’s fine, Alissa. Hey, Lennis, you can’t eat that.”
While Marvin and Alissa were fussing over Amy, Lennis lay down with his front legs folded gently over the stole, a part of which was still in his mouth.
The stable hand who was trying to go across the fence to retrieve the stole stopped and watched as soon after the foal closed his eyes and his breaths became serene.
“This is……”
“Did Lennis fall asleep?”
While Marvin looked stunned, Amy brought her hands to her cheeks, her eyes shifting around in embarrassment.
“Oh my, he can sleep so well. And here I was talking about ‘lack of sleep’, I’m so sorry.”
“Not at all. Miss Amy wasn’t wrong.”
“Eh? But…”
Amy apologized thinking she really had been off the mark, but Marvin shook his head and reassured her.
“He had always been unable to rest in front of the caretaker. It is truly unexpected that he can relax like this in front of you, when he’s met you for the first time today.”
“Really?”
“I really didn’t expect that he could lie down here and sleep so comfortably.”
Across the fence, Lennis was sleeping on Amy’s stole like it was a pillow.
His eyes were closed, and his body was completely defenseless giving off the impression of complete relaxation.
“At any rate, there’s no harm in trying what you suggested. I will change the sleeping straw and see what happens.”
“……. If you say so, Marvin.”
Amy and the others quietly left the place leaving behind a peacefully sleeping Lennis.
After that they walked around and saw the other animals, and then it was time for tea time with the staff members there. It had become a custom for Amy to chat with the staff over tea. After that she rode on Fenti and took her around for a short walk.
During that time, she checked on Lennis as well. Although he woke up several times, he went back to sleep soon after.
