- Chapter 40 - Face to Face with the Foal
Face to Face with the Foal
After greeting the other horses, Amy made her way from the outdoors field to the stables. Foals were kept in the stables and raised separately from the other horses.
“We had a foal brought from the countryside recently but it’s a bit delicate, it still hasn’t gotten used to the stables. I was hoping to show it to you. It might improve after you touch it, Young Lady.” Marvin said to Amy with a gentle tilt of his neck.
“My hand doesn’t have that kind of power, Marvin.”
Healing magic could be used to relieve pain or heal injuries. However there was no magic that could alter someone’s personality.
Of course, Marvin was well aware of it and had spoken teasingly, so Amy also replied with a joking laugh.
“Well. It might work. It always feels good to get healing magic from Miss Amy.”
“Right, Alissa.”
“I’m not lying. When you place your hands on me, my chest feels warm and I have a sense of calm settle all over me.”
“Isn’t that just because my body temperature is higher than yours?”
Amy held out her hand and held it against Alissa’s to show her point. It was a small hand with soft and plump fingers.
“……. As I thought, it really does feel good”
The two giggled at each other. Scott, who was following behind them, loosened his serious expression as he watched them.
Looking at their interaction up till now, Scott could finally understand why his peers had looked at him enviously when he’d been assigned to accompany the young lady today.
There was a world of difference between Miss Amy and other nobles that he had accompanied before; they usually had a haughty and arrogant attitude with people below them.
“My mother and friends always say that too. They say that I’m ‘warm’ and always stick close to me.”
“Ah, I can understand that.”
Amy certainly gave off a warm feel: she had soft and smooth skin and her plump figure looked soft to the touch.
However, the main reason for this was that Amy had a natural ‘healing’ ability that she was unaware of.
Amy always felt like people blessed with these kinds of ‘divine’ abilities were amazing. However, even after transmigrating into the body of a noble, and becoming the fiancee candidate for a Prince, she had a strong mob mentality that had carried over from her previous life. She wanted to escape so badly from being boxed into the role of a ‘villainess’ that she’d spent all her energy into painting herself into the perfect picture of mediocrity.
So, naturally, she couldn’t even begin to imagine that she was one of those people with special abilities that she so admired.
Currently, the animals at the stables all seemed to be in a good mood after being touched by Amy, even though she hadn’t used any healing magic on them.
Marvin had picked up on this quiet early on ever since Amy started visiting the stables.
He had seen a lot of people who had a certain affinity with animals but there was something different about Amy… the words ‘Divine Protection’ came to his mind but he immediately shrugged them off.
In the past, people with Divine abilities, known as Guardians, were either descended from Royalty, or they were devout Priests from the Church.
What’s more, Divine powers usually manifested themselves in older age. It couldn’t be possible for a young girl like this to be a Guardian.
People who manifested their Divine powers were also separated from their families, and placed in special living facilities.
In case of a war, they’d be expected to put their lives on the line to defend their kingdom. This kind of life would be terrible for the young lady who had grown up in an era of relative peace.
To be on the cautionary side, he had conveyed his worries to Edward. He hadn’t said a word to anyone else
Edward had listened to him silently with a look of understanding. Seeing that, Marvin had stopped looking into the matter.
Amy, completely unaware of his thoughts, walked towards the small shed at the back of the stables. It was half open and a number of foals were gathered behind a short fence.
A little away from the group, a foal with a reed coloured coat stood by itself.
Only it’s legs were black. It had a balanced body which gave the impression that it would grow into a splendid horse.
“Is that the foal you were talking about?”
The foal looked cautiously as Amy came closer to it. Marvin spoke in a low voice so as
not to startle it.
“Yes, we call him Lennis.”
“What a pretty horse. And he looks so clever.”
“He does have a good head. That’s why he’s looking at you so alertly.”
The foal had just recently been weaned off and separated from his mother.
His eyes were filled with wariness and he blinked multiple times as he looked around cautiously.
He walked around freely, without much trouble but if any of the other horses came near him then he quickly put distance between them.
“Horses are naturally social animals, they live in herds. But some horses do take time to adapt to a new place…… I hope this one can get used to living here as soon as possible.” Marvin said while awkwardly scratching the side of his head.
Marvin had spent most of his life around horses, beginning with his time in the army when he was younger. He had once toldAmy that since never got married, he treated the horses like his own kids.
He was the kind of person who never said anything even when Edward, when he was little, came to the stables without telling anyone. Marvin would just quietly look after the little Prince.
Naturally, he felt a bit worried over Lennis who hadn’t been able to get used to his surroundings.
While they observed the foals quietly, Lennis finally noticed them and approached them timidly. It had only been a few days since he had started approaching Marvin of his own accord.
He was looking at Marvin at first but when he noticed Amy and the others, he became frightened and reared up its front legs. This behavior was common in horses when they were dissatisfied with something.
Marvin laughed as he tapped the foal’s back gently, to calm it down.
“This is what I meant. He was a lot less nervous in the beginning but day by day he’s slowly getting difficult to handle.”
“He hasn’t been sick or anything until now, right?”
“Yes, I’ve confirmed his lineage and medical history myself.”
If that was the case then he really must be nervous due to the change in environment.
Usually, horses got used to the place as time went on, but it looked like Lennis was the opposite: he kept getting worse.
“I wanted to start training him for riding soon, but it’s impossible if he keeps acting like this.”
“I see… it might be good for him if he cauldron around in the field outside.”
It wasn’t just afraid of other horses but recently it had also stopped going outside, making Marvin extremely worried.
He didn’t mind waiting for it to adapt but if the foal still didn’t improve then it would delay his training and he might not be able to tame it properly.
His big, brown eyes watched them vigilantly. Despite his cautiousness he didn’t bite them or anything.
However, even though he hadn’t run away, he was breathing heavily.
He didn’t seem to be sick or have any problems with his heart, so the cause for heavy breathing was probably nervousness.
Amy’s healing magic could only be used to cure injuries, she couldn’t give a diagnosis. Her knowledge and skills were still lacking for that.
However, if the foal was feeling bad then she wanted to do something to help him.
Like when her stomach hurt, her mother would rub it with her hands. Or when she fell down and got a scratch, her mother would sing ‘pain, pain, go away’.
Thinking so, her hand automatically extended out to the foal.
“Be careful, my lady. It would be bad if you get injured.”
“It’s fine. I just want to greet him. If he doesn’t like it I will stop…… Hello, Lennis. My name is Amy.”
Amy lifted her hand slowly in a way that he could see it from the corner of his eye. As soon as her hand touched him, Lennis’ whole body shook in surprise.
However, he didn’t move away.
Since he was still a foal, he was smaller in size compared to Fenti. Amy didn’t have to look up, her eyes were already at the same level as his face. Amy smiled as she quietly crooned at him.
She tried her best not to startle him.
Soon after she felt something slowly transmit through her palm as she stroked him.
Huh, what is this?…… Could it be Lennis’ emotions that I’m feeling?
In the past, there have been times when she could feel the pain or discomfort from animals when she used healing magic on them.
The thing she was feeling right now was a bit different from that.
It was a heavy, muddy kind of feeling…… Amy recognised this feeling.
