The Things that you Have
“Hey now, what’s wrong, Millie? You’re really beautiful, Millie? Well, rather than beautiful, maybe I should say cute.”
Miriam shook her head at Beatrice’s words.
“Thank you very much. But, I know very well. I do not have the same golden hair or amethyst eyes that my brother and sister have. I just have mediocre curly brown hair with brown eyes. I’m short, and as for my figure, well it isn’t feminine at all.”
“Yeah it certainly seems to be lacking in curves.” Valeria turned a disappointed glance at the grieving Miriam.
“Hey! Ria, don’t make frivolous remarks! Millie, are you feeling down after comparing herself to her siblings?”
“No, that’s not it.” Miriam shook her head again.
Beatrice gently stroked her back as Millie tried desperately to hold back her tears.
“My family takes good care of me. My sister is… she’s strict but I know both my parents and my brother love me a lot.”
“Hmm, is that so.”
“That’s why I feel so pathetic. Whenever I go to tea parties or balls, nobody recognises me as a member of the Caparoni family. Even when I’m right there, no one acknowledges me as Miriam Farina Caparoni. Without a doubt, it’s because I’m not beautiful!”
“Ah, it’s quite complicated, I see.”
Miriam burst into tears and covered her face with both hands. Beatrice led her to her chair and poured a cup of tea.
“Calm down, Millie. Here, drink some tea first.”
Miriam took the cup offered to her and took a small sip.
Her upset heart calmed down a bit with something warm to soothe her.
The warm tea was as if it had been freshly brewed. Even though there was no waiter, maid or attendant there to do so. She thought the teapot on the table hadn’t been replaced even once since she came here, but surely someone must have brewed another one. Miriam wondered in doubt.
“Hey, Millie. You said earlier that you don’t have the gold hair or amethyst eyes like your brother and sister, right? And that you have mediocre curly brown hair and eyes.”
“…Yes.”
Beatrice smiled at Miriam as she clutched her hands.
“Your walnut coloured hair is Fer’s and Ana’s… your parents’ hair colours mixed together. It’s very lovely. And I said so before as well, but your eye colour is the same hazel as Fer’s. It’s not the amethyst colour of your mother, but among your siblings, don’t you match the most with your father? And your lovely curly hair is exactly like Ana’s when she was younger! Haha.”
Taken aback at Beatrice’s words, Miriam raised her head.
“Millie, it’s pointless to count things that are not there. Because you don’t have those things. That’s why count what you have. Don’t think ‘this is so different’, but think ‘this is so similar’.”
“Yeah! No matter what anyone says you are Fer and Ana’s daughter. You’re definitely a member of the Caparoni family. Now don’t cry with that wet face. It’s annoying.”
“Everyone…” Miriam felt like the thorn that had always stuck in her heart had been removed by the three women’s words.
“I’m a member of the Caparoni family. No matter what anyone says I’m the daughter of my mother and father.”
“Besides, I don’t know if it helps but Millie is really pretty from the sense of the world. But, how should I say this, hee hee, the person you’re comparing yourself to is not good… hahaha.”
“Your problem is that you’ve been surrounded by your too beautiful family ever since you were born! If you compare yourself to them every day of course you’d become docile, and your sense of beauty would be insane. Really, you’re an idiot.”
“Don’t twist the love of your family by settling for this complicated thinking.at into what it’s not. Don’t go for the type of love from your family where you have to settle for something complicated like this. Hahaha”
Miriam had thought about changing her opinion of Valeria, but at this: ‘ah the beautiful lady image really is ruined,’ she concluded.
