Escape
“Come on! How can we let a lady carry a child while walking!? There is a man right here! So just let me carry him! Why are you so stubborn!”
“If by ‘man’ you mean yourself, Your Highness, then I cannot let you carry him! I’ll hold Robin myself!”
“Ugh! This isn’t the time to be so particular!”
Miriam and Ivan were once again arguing over who would carry the sleeping Robin.
Sending an exasperated look at the two, Gil bent down and picked up Robin.
“Yes, yes. If you’re going to fight about it then let me carry him. I’m also lowest in terms of status, right?”
The two watched helplessly as Gil strode out of the room before them. Then they shook themselves and ran to follow him.
“This house is unnecessarily large, you know. Rather than a house, it’s more of a castle. That’s why it’ll take us some time to get out of here. Since we can’t use teleportation magic here, we have to walk all the way. We have no time to waste.”
Gil checked the surroundings before walking on. Miriam and Ivan followed him obediently. Gil looked back at them and sighed.
“…You guys should be a bit more vigilant. I mean I myself am wondering why I’m saying this, but as the Prince of a kingdom, and the finance of a Prince, you guys shouldn’t trust someone so easily. Haven’t I been working against you guys until now?”
Honestly, it was ironic coming from him, but, nevertheless, both Miriam and Ivan glanced at each other in apprehension as they realised he was right. Since they were both the youngest in their families, they had lived so far being protected by their parents and older siblings. Their sense of danger was quite low.
They had been suspicious of Gil earlier, but had already discarded all those suspicions and were following him obediently like a bunch of baby chicks.
At this, Gil felt a tinge of worry for the kingdom’s future. Although he had no right to say so, he couldn’t help but speak out.
“…Seriously, you guys can’t be left alone… in a way that’s your strongest point I suppose…”
Gil muttered out before shrugging his shoulders and moving on. This mansion was one of the various properties owned by the Duke of Saint Angelo. It was built long ago as a mansion for the royal family. However, it’s structure was more like a fortress than a house.
There were watchtowers built on all four corners of the mansion’s towering walls. In the middle, there were three steeples with varying heights. They were currently in the highest one which was once used as a prison for confining members of the royal family who committed crimes. It was surrounded by the lower leveled steeples.
The castle walls had the barrier to prevent teleportation magic within them which made it impossible to go out or come in using magic.
As he had mentioned in the letter sent to Emilio, they had to escape quickly in the dead of the night and move beyond the castle walls. It wouldn’t do to run into members of the religion, or the Duke’s guard… so, reaching the stairs, Gil paused to search the surroundings.
“Hmm, as I thought there are quite a lot of people on the floor below. If it was just us men we could have climbed out the window, but it’s impossible with a lady and a sleeping child present.”
Gil mumbled to himself as he tapped his forehead with one finger.
“Looks like there’s no choice but to go down the stairs.”
Coming to a decision, he turned around and handed Robin to Ivan.
“I’m going to go put the guys down there to sleep so you guys wait here for now.”
Ivan hounded after Gil before he could go down by himself.
“I can also fight. I have never lost a spar in swordfighting!”
Gil looked a bit taken aback at Ivans words, but then he began laughing.
“I’ll ask you if it comes to it, but I don’t need you right now! Look after the child and the lady.”
Saying so, he went down the stairs.
