- Chapter 19 - Two Angels
Two Angels
“Sister Millie, what’s this flower called?”
“Let’s see, this flower is garriere. It’s a medicinal herb that helps with fatigue… um, that is, it makes you feel energetic.”
“What’s a medicinal herb?”
“Huh? Oh, a medicinal herb is something that’s used to make medicine. Ah, do you know what medicine is, Robin?”
“I hate medicine!”
“Oh, me too. We’re the same!”
Miriam and Robin, who were squatting in front of the small rainbow coloured flower in Beatrice’s garden, smiled at each other at these words.
Then, holding each other’s hands, they started walking again. Robin found the plants of this world extremely unusual, so he would frequently stop and ask Miriam about them. Miriam was trying to explain their properties to him in words that were easy to understand.
Because of this, Robin became very fond of Miriam in the short time he had known her.
They looked like a pair of an older sister with her younger brother.
Two men were watching over this scene with warm gazes from the terrace.
“My angel is playing with the little angel. What a wonderful sight. I feel like I should call an artist to capture this…”
“Ah, I see. By the way, how come Miss Miriam knows so much about plants?” Emilio asked after giving a small reply to Leonardo’s doting remarks about his sister.
“Millie has always been the type to immerse herself fully into things. There was a time when she became obsessed with a book about plants, and since then, she read all kinds of books about them. She probably gained all her knowledge from that time. Thanks to that, our library is full of books about plants.”
“It’s admirable that she studies so diligently.”
“Speaking of, the book she’s into these days is called ‘Don’t shirk your duties! You Fools!’”
(TN: this dialogue was said by Valeria)
Emilio, who was trying to get more information about Miriam, ended up being told off from the other side of the round table on the terrace.
Leonardo had arrived about an hour ago at Beatrice’s mansion.
He was planning to immediately put Miriam in the carriage and send her back home, but was stopped by Valeria.
“This one here keeps getting distracted by the kid, and isn’t listening at all. So let Millie stay here to babysit!”
It was difficult to refuse when one of the highly respected Grand Witches asked for a favour.
Leonardo reluctantly agreed, and sent his attendant back home to give them the news.
This time, a person had been deliberately summoned from another world. But due to the lack of information about it, the person in charge, Emilio, his aide, Leonardo, and the three witches decided to investigate some more before announcing the incident to the public.
“‘An organisation in red robes’ are behind this. It is possible that more than one person in the organisation is familiar with magic. If we consider the amount of magical energy you need to perform summoning magic, we can assume there to be about 10 to 20 people proficient in magic.”
“With the amount of magic users decreasing these days, to be able to gather even 10 to 20 people… it must be quite a large organisation.”
The number of magical users had been on a decline. For that reason, it had often been the subject of debate about whether or not magical users should be protected and managed by the state. To gather 10 to 20 magical users in such a situation was extremely difficult. It would be impossible to do so without a large scale recruitment, and, a recruitment of magic users on a large scale should gather a lot of notice.
“If so, then maybe they used some other method?”
Watching the witches lost in thought, Emilio recalled the organisation that had been mentioned often on the agenda of recent meetings.
‘True Salvation Religion’. It was a newly established religious organization that was slowly increasing members all over the land.
The religion claimed the history of how the Kingdom was found by the Grand Witches was forged by the Royal Family. In truth, the God of Salvation had been the one to defeat the evil in the land, and the founder of the religion claimed to be a direct descendant of said God.
And the organization’s banner was ‘red’ in colour.
Still, there wasn’t enough evidence to conclude that they are the organisation in the red robes was the same as them.
“It’s difficult to amplify magical energy, but I have an idea on how to regulate the consumption of magical energy.”
Eleonora spread open her robe and pointed towards the embroidery inside it.
“AH!” Beatrice and Valeria exclaimed at the same time.
Emilio and Leonardo watched them with puzzled expressions.
“What is it?”
“It’s the beard of a black dragon, and black magic stones.” Beatrice answered Leonardo’s inquiry. However, Emilio and Leonardo, who did not know if those things, remained confused.
“The ‘black dragon’s beard’, and ‘black magic stones’ are magical materials that can be extracted from a demon beast called the Black Dragon that lives in the demonic realm. They contain a large amount of ‘fragments’ of magical energy also known as ‘Demonic power’.”
“In other words, it makes it possible to use magic without having to use one’s own magical energy. Anyone can use them to perform simple magic spells that don’t require a lot of magical energy. Magical users can also use these to do spells of a much larger scale while saving their own magical energy.”
The Black Dragon appeared at the valley every 200 years in an aged body. Even though it would be old, a normal army could not suppress it by itself. Which was why Eleonora and the kingdom’s Knights of chivalry would work together to exterminate it. The parts acquired from it would be put on the market, after taking some aside for research.
Since they were so little in number, the parts were extremely rare. It was not surprising that Emilio and Leonardo, who didn’t have any magical ability, were not aware of it.
“It’s highly likely the young dragon that appeared in the valley recently may be linked to this incident.”
“What, that someone deliberately led it there?”
“It’s possible.”
It would be a catastrophe if the Black dragon accidentally ended up in a village. If it was summoned deliberately then that would be a serious offense.
“Can we assume that the two are related?”
“If only we had a bit more information…”
Listening to the conversation Emilio decided to share some more information about the True Salvation religion as well. Even though he wasn’t sure about their role in all this, he gave his report to the witches.
“It certainly sounds like a suspicious organization. For now, let’s keep it in mind as well.”
“This is probably all we know so far. Let’s have another meeting when someone finds some more information.”
Miriam and Robin returned just when they had settled the matter. Robin was scratching his eyes and yawning loudly as if tired.
“Um, Robin seems to be sleepy. Haha, looks like my hand has gotten warmer.” Miriam smiled with her hand wrapped gently around Robin’s small one. Looking at the adorable scene, both Emilio and Leonardo covered their eyes and looked away.
“Leo… I completely agree with your earlier assessment. Miss Miriam is really… an angel…”
“So you understand, my friend…”
“Yeah, yeah, we get it. Stop being cringey. Robin, sorry for making you wait. Let’s go back home.” Throwing these reckless words at the First Prince and the heir to the Marquess, Valeria let out her hand for Robin.
Robin grabbed her hand but wouldn’t let go of Miriam’s. Perhaps it was because of the loneliness of being transferred to another world by himself, but he didn;t want to be separated from the people he had gotten close to.
“It would be nice if sister Millie can also come…”
At Robin’s words both Miriam and Valeria gave in immediately.
“Yo, blonde idiot! Lend Millie to me for a night.”
“Is it alright, brother…”
Leonardo like he was being ganged up on by Valeria with her rash words, and Miriam with her puppy dog eyes.
“That b-blonde idiot is referring to me, right. Ah! I can’t resist when you look at me like that, Millie. What am I to do…”
“Please! Brother!”
“I guess it can’t be helped! Take care of yourself.”
Leonardo gave in immediately to Miriam’s upturned eyes.
